You're on the right track so far. Unfortunately, the sound is hard to find in the sea of noise that this car produces. ESPECIALLY if you have exhaust.... which many of us do.
Usually what I do to calm my nerves is to drive close to a wall of some sort that will reflect the sound of the car back at me. Focus on the sound of induction from the engine and hit the gas.
If you don't already know what it sounds like, just imagine a ballpeen hammer stricking a thick slab of metal. The thing is, once you've heard it, you'll never forget what it sounds like. You may have even heard this sound already, but you didn't know it was pinging... so if you think of an old klunker puttering around struggling to get up a hill... the sound may come to mind.
Anyway I hope that helps.

Detonation can sound different depending on the severity and even the type of engine. As you said, with all the other noises going on it can be hard to distinguish sometimes.
If it isn't really bad, I think it sounds like a bunch of BB's being shot into the bottom of a coffee can.

Yes, an electric shock is close. Steve Millen described VQ35de ping like a sewing machine. A few weeks ago I heard my friends PE TT make the sewing machine sound, I told him and he took it to the shop right away for a quick fix(re-tune).
The sound is very light and hard to catch sometimes but once you know the sound you'll never forget it.
