Default CAMs without a reflash?

I am toying with the idea of getting Nismo cams installed while I am waiting for a TT.

With POP, plenum and exhaust, would I have any problem running without a reflash? I'm worried that I might start going real lean.

I know I won't get the full effect of the cams without a flash, but it won't be too long until I get the TT installed (assuming JWT and APS get moving on CARB), so I'm not too concerned about that.

Will the car run fine without the flash?

All Z's are different, but you should be around a mid 13 in the upper rpms with the addition of cams(lean, but not too lean). The time when you really would need a flash is if you put on test pipes or high flow cats.

not sure about hitting 13's with only those NA mods and no flash....i remember reading that article about the nismo r-tune Z that had all that nismo NA mods, including headers and cams and the numbers did not show much difference from the stock Z....
your car should run fine but why not just have the cams installed at the same time as you turbo?

I am talking about a mid 13 A/F(Air/Fuel ratio), not 13s in the quarter. But since we are on that topic, magazines and many members on this board have run 13s in the quarter-Bone Stock.

I have been waiting for a CARB approved TT for a long time, and I am getting a nervous tick from not doing anything to my car during the waiting period. I want to do something now just to give me something to do while I wait. Also, it helps spread out the cost over a longer period of time.

I just installed the cams on my car, and i do not have a reflash. I'm running the following mods:
nismo cams, straight pipes, non-resonated JIC titanium exhaust, JIC ypipe, nismo headers, 05 track plenum (which i highly recomend with cams), intake, ground kit, tilton, ur pulleys, etc....
So far i'm ok, i am thinking of reflashing it to gain the most out of the car though.
BUt for right now, the car runs and pulls strong...

You will want to check your A/F ratios at WOT on a dyno or via road testing with a wideband if you install cams. The ECU will adjust fuel trim to get your to stoich...but only at idle and part throttle conditions. At WOT, you will likely run a little bit leaner. Cams, by defination, make cars run leaner....how lean...depends on your other mods, and the status of your ECU.

So its a good idea to check...mild cams may result it little difference in A/F ratios at WOT.

We checked the plugs, (i was running 1-step colder plugs), and they were burning perfect. I swapped back to the stock ones, and the car didn't run as nice, and the cel came back on for random cylinder misfire.
so back to colder plugs it go.......
I wasn't running too rich or too lean, not sure about WOT, but it seems from looking at the plugs that it was pretty decent.

Do you have any dyno proof to support your highly recommended 05 track plenum suggestions?

if you do a search, jason posted his dyno of the plenum. it really gains in the upper rpm range. with cams, (well, nismo cams at least), you produce more power in the upper rpm range, and you feel the car really pull hard with this combo. both would work hand-in-hand in the upper rpm range. Also, if you have a reflashed ecu with an extended redline, you'll really notice the difference.

We have a few customers who have a reflashed ecu with extended redline, and they notice a big difference in the upper rpm range on their cars with the 05 track plenum.
it's a great top end mod.

yes you can use the lower plenum with an upper, however, some people have had luck and other have not had luck with making decent hp gains by doing so. I've seen both used together, and it's a trial and error thing so far, as to what setups make more power and which do not. I have seen people make power, and some that do not by using both. It's not too expesnive to try it out, they run on our site $222, and you can always turn around and sell them, they are in high demand.
