Default Attention..... Urgent.... Does Your Tranny Do This???? Kinda Long.....

Hey everyone. I have a serious question to ask you. I have a 03 and I recently got the entire tranny replaced. Since then it has driven great however I think something is really messed up with the gearing. I have checked in other 03 with and without tranny replacements and new Z and they dont do what mine is. I have attached a picture but let me try and explain it..

Ok here I go. Before when you would go to shuft into 5th. It felt like there was a wall the kept the shifter from going anymore further to the right. The only way you could go further was to push down on the ****. Well since I have had my new tranny it doesnt stop. It's like the wall is gone. It just goes past where its supposed to stop without being pushed down. Now you still have to push down for me to go into reverse but the shifter goes all the way over to the "line" the reverse gear is on. Hopefully the pic that I have attached will help you understand.

My dealership is not doing anything about it. To me it never did it before and I havent been in any other Z where it has done it so something is not set right in the car. I just gotta firgure out what it is so I can be like, HAHAHA you were wrong. I am really really fed up with it. It really stinks especially when Im driving it hard or running against someone and you go into 5th and you miss the gear because the shifter just keeps going all the way to the right. Please help me out. Thanks.

Matt

maybe they put the shift plate in upside down? Normally there is a little "hump" right at the 5th/6th gear gate, and then you have to push down to move over into reverse.

With the new tranny they are supposed to reset the maximum left to right and front to back movement and reset the shift plate. If they did not do it that would explain your problems.

^^^ Excellent point. I have a friend of mine getting me the Nissan FSM for the Z so I can see the inside of the transmission to point it all out to Nissan when I go back with the answer. I just want to have everything ready to show Nissan so they wont give me any bull.... Any other input is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

This procedure is in the service manual.....it's supposed to be a requirement with any tranny removal and re-install.

Now that is weird. I am still determined to get it to where it wont do it. It kinda sad when the shifter doesnt naturally go into 5th like it did before. Something is different that is causing it to do this. I just gotta find out what.

Go to this link and look for the gold colored triangular plate with three screws. In one or two of the pictures you can see the hump on the plate that prevents the nub on the side of the shifter from moving to the right. Long odds that this is the problem. For whatever reason, the lockout is not operating.

^^^^WOW!!!!! Awesome pictures. Tomorrow I will take everything out and see how it is all placed. Hopefully this is the reason it is not stopping. Thanks a bunch.

That's really disconcerting isn't it? The most simple part of the job...that's what they screw up.

Makes you wonder what else they neglected to do.

Yea I know right. Well I have some great news. No I didnt save money by switching to GEICO I just got done fixinf the shifter. What was happening is that on the stock shifter there is this little metal piece that stck out that is supposed to hit a little humop on the metal plate. Well Nissan put this on backwards. So I just un bolted it flipped it over and boom she stops and slids right into 5th and 6th gear. I cant wait to tell Nissan I fixed it and how much of an idiot there tech is. hahahahaha. Well so now I am happy.

Feels good to fix it yourself, don't it. Rub it in their face like a Dog that's done bad.
