Question Facotry air box mod?

I used to have a Subaru WRX. The guy's on the Subaru chat page came up with a resonator box on the air filter that could be removed. This changed the tone of the car, and also allowed it to breat a little better with the aid of a K&N drop in filter. Does anyone know if the Z has such a resonator box to remove? It may free up a couple of ponies if it does. That could save a couple of $ on a intake.

it does have a large air box, but if you were to remove it you would then have a hot-air intake since the box sits inside the engine bay with the front intake end being out in the bumper area.

on another note.... all this talk of getting aftermarket CAI systems on the Z is crazy to me... the stock Z is already a CAI. Thats why gains with the aftermarket CAI's are so minimal. I think most buy it for looks.

I am not talking about the acutal air box, on the subaru, there was another additional box attached to the air box itself.

I think I know what you are talking about-- My car used to have one- I removed it. Its a resonator or a snorkel through which the airbox gets its air. It helps to baffle sound, but it also restricts airflow to the intake. If the Z has one and it's removable, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get rid of it and replace it with a cold air or forced induction hose-- that's what I did on my car: custom cold air/forced induction to the airbox.

The cheapest way to create your own short ram intake is to remove the factory bottom portion of the air box, and then put in a drop-in.

the resonator is there to allow air to flow into the intake in bursts, if you will. it is to prevent ice from forming in the throttle body.

and the Z doesn't have one.

Agreed. I don't think the Z has any resonator apparatus. If you look at the intake, it's very much a CAI/RAM air style, with a direct path for the air to reach the filter.

There is no intake resonator for the Z.
If it had one, that would been the first thing to take out.

look at the difference of area below the curve and it will be better, you have 4hp throught the whole band, which is a stong amount of power to have. but I would like to see a independant test, Im suprised no one has dynoed a injen yet.
