Default 3rd gear grinds?!?!

Ok my 3rd gear grinds? It's not the clutch or anything. It's when I shift fast it grinds, only when its at high rpm's. If I am accelerating fast I have to wait for the rpm's to go down. Do you guys no whats wrong? Is the gear going out or what?

3rd gear synchros are notoriously bad on the pre-06 z. if you still have a warranty it should cover it

Take it to the nearest Nissan dealer and tell them what it is doing. A buddy of mine had his '03 tranny replaced at 23k miles and just blew his replacement Friday night on the way to the dragstrip, after ONLY 10k miles. I am thinking some linkages broke because it is stuck in 5th gear and will not shift out, but what do I know, I only have a 5AT. Only the shifter will move freely into any gear besides 5th and 6th. Prior to Friday night, that morning he took it in for the fuel hose recall and had the dealer look at his tranny because it was whining and they ordered him a new one that morning.

That might be bad.
First thing they asked me was did I change my tranny fluid.
I said no - they said "good."
Of course, I only had 11,500 miles on a 2005.
Now have a 2006 transmission.

I am not sure if you guys know or not, but when changing out the tranny fluid, it says to use ONLY GL-4 fluid in the owners manual, IIRC. Supposedly, if you run a GL-5 or better fluid, the sulphur in it will eat away at the brass synchros.

Had the same exact problem you had. Chaged out my 3rd gear synchro and it fixed it right up.

Did you change it? If so how hard was it?

I wouldn't be opening up the trans if your still under warranty. even the Z service manual tells the techs not to open the tran if there are any internal trans problems. it bascially just tells them to replace the thing.
