Default Auto Tranny question.

Is 5th gear in the auto tranny O/D like 6th in MT, or does 5th still make power?

At what speed...? At normal operating speeds, I'm sure 5th gear serves as an overdrive. However, the shift from 4th to 5th under WOT [at about 130 mph] is pretty firm, resulting in another lunge toward terminal velocity. I've had my car up to about 140 mph, and it was pulling hard. I understand the top speed in my car is electronically limited to about 150 mph... but I've never actually tested that.

ive taken my car all the way to 145 or 150 were the governor kicks in of course my car is turbo but you will make power on it. Now at normal cruising speed in the highway like you said it wont kick in after you pass 4500 rpm's.

Power (horsepower and torque) at the flywheel is the same in every gear. Power measured at the rear wheels is different in each gear. Generally, dyno runs are done in fifth with a manual, and fourth with a automatic. The gear ratio is 1.000 to 1.000.

automatic fifth gear: 0.834 x 3.357 = 2.799

manual sixth gear: 0.794 x 3.538 = 2.809

For all intent and purpose they are the same.

Thanks, that did give me the answet I was looking for. No you didn't waste 20 minutes . The main point of the question wasn't can I make power in 5th but more along the lines of can it be slipped into 5th at cruising speeds to drop the RPM and not stress the engine as I'v been told can happen if you slip it into a gear jsut to lower the RPMs.
