Default Removed spare, jack, tow pin and tool

I should be getting my Stillen exhaust this week so I decieded I should start ridding the car of some additional weight. I thought it might be interesting to note that the stock spare, jack, tow pin and tool came to a total weight of 37 lbs. (give or take a couple lbs, it is an old scale

For those of you that drive the car all the time it might not be the best idea but for me, I drove my MKIV Turbp Supra without the spare for 3 years and had no problems. I also relocated the battery to the rear to make the weight distribution closer to 50/50 - front/rear. I will wait until my warrantee runs out before I do that on this car.

Any other suggestions on how to cut some weight (from the car) are welcomed?

what model car do you have?

suprisingly the performance/touring rims are 26lbs a peice. you can replace them with fordged 18" rims that weigh 16-17lbs a peice. thats 40lbs lost... and thats in unsprung weight no less. a pretty damn sweet place to lose 40lbs IMO. but thats not quick and cheap, but certainly something to look at. I remember a rule of thump, 10lbs of unstrung weight is like 100lbs of sprung weight. in reality its not too far off. someone should try a dyno of both tires. I think the results would be intersting.

other than that, mats in the car could bite it. beyond that your looking at interior peices, plastic and what not. probably not stuff you want to remove for daily driving.

Cost of this weight loosing mod is only about $3.00. Take 4 exlax 2 1/2 hours before driving. Then drive in the nude. Clothes=3lbs. Huge dump=1 to 3lbs. Thats 6lbs, and it only cost $3.00. Dont thank me, this is what I do.

Default Thanks

I knew someone would throw in the ex lax reccomendation. I guess I asked for it.

I have the 17 inch wheels that come standard with the enthusiast model. I bought this model knowing I would replace the brakes and tires. I will be going with 18 inch maybe 19 inch if they don't weigh much more Volk TE 37's. I also like the Brembo (red calipers to match the Silverstone exterior.) These rotors will also cut down on some unsprung weight. Probably another 20 lbs. So with the brake kit and wheels I could unload nearly 60 lbs of unsprung weight

I just wish Stillen would have come out with a titanium version of their exhaust. I also think some aftermarket cats/downpiep will cut some weight.

Thanks for the help

actually 19" TE37s are about 20 lbs, Id bet the 17" rims couldnt be more than 22lbs, meaning now your only losing 8lbs. Ive asked and researched, and I can find NO GOOD REASON from a performance stand point to get 19" rims. simple as that. the only benifit at all is that you can fir 15" rotors, something which does not yet exist, and even when it does, you couldnt accelerate and brake fast enough to fade 14" rotors in a Z 15 is a waste.

there is appearance, but I was only looking at performance.

hope this helps, feel free to research on your own of course.

also unsprung weight relies greatly on distance from center, a 18" wheel has alot of its weight on the lip which is now .5inches farther from center, which means even if it is lighter than 17" rim, it has a handicap from its size(19" only gets worse of course). the same goes for 14" rotors that might be lighter, but have their mass at a greater radius.

"whosdady" you took the words out of my mouth! If Stillen came out with a titanium version of this exhaust i'd be the first to buy it.

Well put ares. Rotational inertia is quite important here, as you alluded too.
