Hmmm...think they're honoring TSB under power train warranty only. Out of warranty you're SOL. So salvage voids warranty? I have not a clue about salvages.

Recalls are different than TSB's. I'll cross my fingers for you as well for that possible exception with warranty.

I created a thread long time ago for filing complaints to NHTSA as these VQ's being defective. Due to lack of interest with Z owners who suffer OC, it fell into the abyss and mod wouldn't sticky it per my original request, fine whatever. The NHTSA has the power to mandate 'recalls' when manufactures rather not, hence only a TSB for us Z and G folks. 2006 2.5L Altima's got a 'recall' for bad rings and that recall is listed there. Nothing for Z's. G's, only that headlight recall. (I only looked under yr 2006 just now before posting this)

This is ********.

I have 2960 miles on my new engine as of today. Yesterday I went in to get the oil checked and have someone diagnose a noise the car is making since the first swap. Well the noise is going to have to wait until Monday but...

but...

the oil was checked and it was barely registering on the dipstick. I have not touched the car at all. The service advisor told me that as of now, it looks like I might need ANOTHER motor. So we shall see.

Interesting...

"Typical normal oil consumption for these V-6 series engines is a quart of oil in 1,200-5,000 miles. Usage of a quart or more in 1,000 miles or less indicates internal engine issues, requiring repairs or engine replacement."
So, it is a problem if you burn a quart in 1k miles but not 1.2k? That seems silly to me. Anything under 1.5k miles is a problem... if not more. That range of 1.2k to 5k is dumb.

^Sounds like the old OC standard, being 1qt/1000mi or worse = replacement way back 'before' the revup TSB.

That quote is funny b/c my original VQ proved internal issues in my UOA report while loosing 1qt/2300 miles. How u say serious fuel dilute in oil caused by internal blow-by lol.

The techs told me today that the reason my oil is low is because this is still the first 5 quarts of oil in the new motor. So I was told to go home, change the oil, and come back in 1000 miles. We shall see.

I want my old *** RX-7 back...

I am curious. I was about to purchase an 06. Got the VIN number to cross check with Nissan HQ and they told me that car isn't prat of the "recall" so there should be no OC. the car is 7000 miles and the owner said he hasnt had a problem yet. But i dont want to purchase it and find out after a year of driving i'll start consuming oil. And Warranty is already expired.

So my question is have any of you checked with Nissan to see if your vehicle has been recalled? Or did Nissan not put the OC as part of the recall???

Thoughts?

Welcome. There isn't a 'recall' it is a TSB - Read page 1 of this thread.

The only way to find out if your engine has Oc is to check the dipstick, drive for 1000 or so miles, then check it again.

Default Whats should I do?

I have an 06' Z MT w/25000 miles on it. I stumbled on this thread, went and checked my oil (About 2750k on oil) and it barely read on the dip stick. I added two quarts which brought it up to half between the H - L. So I would say I'm burning 1qt/1000k or so. I run Mobil1 5w-30
It also has black exhaust tips, on the inside and on the bottom of the outer edge of the tips.. Like they are drooling.

I drive the crap outa my Z pretty much.. I dont bang it off the rev limiter or do burnouts, but I always take it to high revs, high rev matched downshifting, cruise around town at 4000rpm.
I have full exhaust, pullys, cai, plenum, gounding kit, fidanza flywheel/exedy clutch.

I took my car to a dealer to start my consumption tests. They changed my oil which he said was fairly crappy.
The service advisor came out to my car to look at the mods I have done and said that Nissan will probably try to screw me out of warranty if I try to make a claim for a new engine. So he gave me the print out for recording the oil consumption and is leaving it up to me to record it. I kinda agree with the guy to do this because I didnt want to hurt my chances of getting a new engine.

What should I do?
1. I get the V2 engine swap and hope it solves the problem.(some are failing)
2. I stop using Mobil1 5w-30 and switch to 0w-40
3. I install new pistons and rings (better compression ratio) when I do the planned Camshaft swap.
Is the V2 as powerful as the original engine?

1. people say the new engine does rev smother not that I really noticed.
2. It has been (at least in my exp) that the synthetic does burn more oil
3. People say if you build the motor the problems go away

But i suppose above all this if the dealer said here is a a paper to record you oil comsumption, that is a joke. Even if it is burning oil Nissan would never approve of a new engine if you did the test. I am going on my third engine next tuesday unless the car is bought back sooner I hope, and each time the dealer has to change the oil, seal everything, the dipstick, filter, drain plug and fill plug and tell you to drive 1000 miles. If you read the tsb, you can actually drive 1500 miles and still be in the same bracket. I was lucky, 8 mm low on the stick but i drove 1450 miles, driving only 1000 miles would have forced me to do another test and blow more money on gas I suppose. The first test I did the dealer toped off my oil and said drive 1000 miles. I came back burning oil then the dealer said they had to change my oil and filter and drive another 1000 miles. Point is if you are burning enough, have the dealer change the filter and oil and make a record of it otherwise you will never get a new engine

Default New to this forum, but not to "Z's"

Hi all, I just got done reading ALL 208 pages of this post. It took me 3 days at work, but its ok cause I was being paid. hahah

I have a 2005 35th ann. with 28K on it and I have really bad pinging/knock 2000rpm - 3000rpm. I also have oil consumption issues so I am trying to get my block replaced under the TSB. I just want to say THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my heart, you have provided so much information on this and literally saved me from the goose chase..

I brought my car into a specialty "Z" shop here in southern CA and they told me whats up, they even wrote "oil consumption issues" on my invoice. They then told me to go to Nissan Of Velencia CA and that they are competent, and wont give me the runaround. So far I have had no problems with the dealership. They gladly started the oil consumption test and said my oil change ($35) would be refunded if the motor needed to be swapped. When I was waiting the service manager even took out the TSB and said it has to drop 7-8mm but 1/2 Qt would make sure I fail.. I found it funny he was almost prompting me. I will keep you updated on the status of my test / swap.

I will be taking the advice of the forum and driving a good 300Mi trip at hi rpm , and driving "like a bat out of hell" . To the posters that recommended Oil Analysis, Thank you and I'm sorry i don't remember your handle. IF I get a swap I will definitely be doing the analysis on my oil for break in, that is the best advice EVER. I use to do that on my old Chevy Small block 383's when I would build them and I assure you this motor is no different.

Thanks again EVERYONE for all your Help and input!!!

props to you for doing your research before your first post! good luck with your situation, but it looks like youre in pretty good hands. oh btw, since you read the whole thing, maybe you could answer my question! does the z still have to be under warranty, or what are the circumstances? i did not read the whole thing

Its to my understanding that if you are out of warranty that you are also SOL on OC issues. Make sure you have actually exceeded your powertrain warranty before you give up.

well we bought the car wrecked with a salvaged title, and salvages usually lose all warranty privilages. so i might be SOL. BUT, the car wont even be fixed for another few weeks, so i dont know if it has OC issues yet. im just trying to figure this stuff out in case i do have a problem

It depends on the terms of the salvage.. i think **sometimes** a salvage car retains its warranty. Most of the time I think its gone though.. just check. Either way, if you are salvaging it, why not just spend a little $$ and build the motor.. then you wont have these problems.. ?
