Yes 06 6mt, I was just joking about finding a way to take out the oil. The guy at the dealership told me that it was downshifting that was the problem... same excuse many people hear have been getting.

I've been living with my 2006 6mt oil consumption problems for a good while now. Unfortunately though, my 350Z has been out of warranty for a long time now since it has 90,000 miles on it

I'm using Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30 synthetic oil and I'm having to add roughly 1 quart every 1500 miles. At this point I'm really not looking to take this thing down to the dealership and pay out of pocket to have a new engine installed. As far as I can tell the car runs fine as long as I keep oil in it.

Here's my question: If I plan on driving this car until 200k miles or more, what are the long-term consequences of this, if any? Will the engine simply keep using oil but working fine as long as I keep the oil topped off? I bought this car to be a daily driver for many many miles and I really don't want to sell it. I'd like to have at least some assurance that, even if I keep the oil topped off, I'm not driving a ticking time-bomb of some sort.

 

Ya if you keep oil in it everything should be ok.. I have the same prob but a little worse..
I plan on doing a new set of pistons/camshafts in a couple years to fix the prob and make more jam. It would cost like $4000 to rebuild the motor.. I think thats the best way to go. You could sell and buy a HR, but you would lose money there too.. And re finance.. I've heard alot of un happy ppl with the new engine they swap.
1 qrt every 1500 miles isnt too bad.. Mine is 1 qrt per 900 miles..

 

I have almost read this entire post over a few days before posting an update/question.

First of all I noticed an Oil Consumption of 1 1/4 quarts per 2000 miles on my 06.

I then went into the dealership and I am on an OC Test right now.

Is the new V2 motor a rev-up style(ie has adjustable exhaust valve timing)?

Possibly plugs, 02 sensors and cats fouling up prematurally. Maybe gumming up ring packs making OC even worse, if not already the case now (educated guess). Then you've got fuel dilute which comes with ring blow-by = killing oil protection properties even sooner than normal. Excessive fuel dilute kills any oil in many ways.

I suggest a UOA to at least see how long you can safely run your oil while having OC and still protect internals. Otherwise, yes you'll have a ticking time bomb with oil not doing it's job after x many miles, but still in service.

Revups are still revups. V1 (way back in that day) and V2 are are known as a revup VQ here.
V1 = 1st version/revised revup replacement
V2 = 2nd version/revised revup replacement

 

Good call on the oil analysis. I just requested a Blackstone Labs testing kit. I'm using Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30 which is advertised to go for 35,000 miles (or one year, whichever is earlier) before needing an oil change. Should I send in the oil to be analyzed at about 10,000 to see how it's doing or should I wait a little longer like 15,000 or more?

 

I ran their TSO formula back on my original VQ burner. Now it's SSO which is their new formula I believe and what you're using.

Can't recommend how long to take your oil, but I can say I took my TSO to ~5K mi then did a UOA. My VQ sheared it down to a 20w with only moderate OC (1qt/2300-2500 mi) obviously adding fresh during that OCI. My fuel dilute was what pounded it down to that viscosity. 20w is not good for longevity in any engine.

 

hi i recently purchase a 06 auto enthusiast. i never did my research before buying the car and when i went to the auto store they was telling me to not buy royal purple cause it gives car engine problem. so i went home and did some searching and came across ur thread. does this only apply to manual trans? and is there a problem using royal purple for an oil change

 

^ As far as which oil you decide to use in the engine, doesn't matter if it's a 6mt or 5at.

my question is my car has 35,000 on it. I believe the warranty ends at 36,000. Is the new engine only covered until the 36,000?

 

Naw your good for 5 years/60 000miles on the drive train..
How long have you had the new engine?
How much has it been consuming?
I'm going to build my engine with high compression and JWT cams..

Does anyone here have stats' on the reliability of the HR and VQ engines. I'm not talking torque, horsepower, etc., just good ol' reliability (i.e. less HPM [Headaches Per Mile]!) I'm under the impression that, although the VQ is more powerful/refined, overall, the HR is sturdier than the newer one. Correct me if I'm wrong---no blasting required, but will be accepted while eating humble pie, if necessary...

 

I bought my 06 about a month ago knowing about the issue...it was one that had the block replaced, but was too good to pass up and so far I'm 1200 miles into it and still showing full on the oil...knock on wood

This is a rather interesting thread, since I am looking at possibly purchasing a 2006 Z Enthusiast, with the automatic trans.

I got kind of lost withering through this entire thread.

Is this oil consumption specific to the manual transmission Z? Or is it inherent in all 2006 Z's?

Can someone please clarify, before I spend money on buying one?

I feel for all of you who are dealing with this oil consumption issue.

I know this is prob a stupid question but I am adding 1qt of oil in my 06 engine every thousand miles....my question is do I still have to do my regular oil change at the 3000 mark? Or could I go without an oil change a little longer since I have new oil circulating every 1000 miles? Thanks in advance.
