RevUp Oil Consumption TSB and discussion
Hi everyone,
I've got a 2005 6MT Infiniti G35 that is using oil, and plenty of it. I'm in Canada, and they seem to have a different procedure here than what the TSB states... they check the oil every 1000km (620 miles) until they have done six checks (so, about 6000km). I just finished this routine with the local Nissan dealer because the Infiniti dealer is about 500km away from me.
So.. the Infiniti service mgr called me this week to discuss the test results... he tells me that Infiniti has suspended the engine replacements while they do some more "testing" because some people have had 2-3 replacement engines and the problems continue. He says they have bought back a couple of vehicles with V2 replacements that are still burning oil, and that by driving them without constant high rpms, that these former oil burners are consuming no oil at all. Until they finish doing some more testing, they are not replacing any more engines. They suspect that because of the "cool exhaust sound", that drivers are holding the revs around 5-6000 rpm constantly to make them sound good.
He also told me that they have no problems with automatics because the computers won't let the engine stay at those revs for long. He also claimed that the engines for the auto and 6MT are identical... I disagreed, but he insisted that he uses the exact same engine as a replacement for either vehicle. He asked if I would be willing to part with my car for a couple of weeks while they test drive it... I said no. I did say that I would put 1000km on the car while keeping the revs below 4000... I drive a lot of highway miles, so I should have 1000km on within the next week.
btw... my oil was down 12-14mm on average for every 1000km of driving... clearly in the "no-good" range according to the TSB.
A couple questions for the group here (i've posted similar info over on g35driver.com):
1. Anyone heard that engine replacements (in Canada) are suspended?
2. Is there a different TSB for Canada? (Some dealers have suggested this is the case)
3. Any advice on what I should do next? Is the customer satisfaction number the same for Canada and the US?
4. My engine spark knocks like CRAZY at low rpm and part throttle... using the best gas I can find... is this associated with OC? Anything I can do in the meantime about this? It's quite embarrasing.
Thanks for any advice.

My 06 Z is consuming oil and when I took it to the dealer they told me that 1qt every 1k miles is normal... I was pretty mad and made them do the oil test either way. Hopefully it consumes more than 1qt of oil. I need to find a way to suck oil out of my Z with out them finding out...
...man!, this has GOT to be one of the longest threads in this site!

No, but don't live up there. Wait and see if members here and on Driver still getting approved, then there's your answer in general for North America. Some Canadians have been known post here and on Driver.
Get the TSB number they use and/or say there's a different one up your way. Compare to one currently in use by Infiniti: ITB08-002c.
I would think so being Infiniti covers North America like NNA = Nissan North America with their number. Have you called regardless like already suggested on G35Driver's OC thread? If there is a different number, they would give you that.
OC reduces octane rating.
Are you a 2006 6mt?
I'm ignoring your last sentence

I'm just giving a shout-out to my homie 06CPV35 and my buddy ZeeForce! They have been on here serving the My350Z community with the OC issues for quite some time now and I just want to applaud them for all they've done to help me and everyone else on here.
My baby now has like 10,000 iles since my V2 Engine swap, and I am now burning 1QT every 3,000 miles. I must say that I am pretty happy with that, considering what I used to burn.
Thank you guys!

I'm shooting for 1qt/5000 or better. Almost there. Check your PCV and make sure it rattles when you shake it. Made a difference on mine.
350zx6r and ulownz: Know I've read lots of good buy-back info in here. Some even disclosing their lemon law attorney I think, but not sure if for your state. Hopefully someone will, otherwise guess search in this thread for those. First page has link to BBB and believe lemon laws for different states. Maybe there's Attorney references from them that will help.
i found a lawyer online i believe it was thru my350z however he is not very clear as far as how things will go and what i am responsible. he said good things but I wanna be very clear about EVERYTHING.
^I'd do the same about 'everything' being clear if in your shoes. I remember there's that crazy buy-back formula I read in here for some state. Nissan has their basic sub-standard one (someone gave that link on here long time ago), but pretty sure state buy-back laws will supersede NNA's basic crappy one. Hmm or could've been NNA's $$ offer to release them of any future liability/claims from OC is what I saw. Not sure now.
Sorry to hear this is the road you must take, but I'd do the same in a heartbeat if I had continuous VQ longblock OC failures. My motto...thirds a charm or strike three you're out and I'm done with this crap.
Let us know how things go and for others ready and/or doing the same.

What oil are you guys currently on?
I know I've been out of the loop for quite some time, is ther a new chart for which to measure the OC aside from that of the TSB? You mentioned of 1QT by 3,000 is still a failure according to tha chart. Also, I know that Zeeforce and yourself have been working along with Terry on the UOA.

Thanks to all of you who continue to provide quality info into this site. I have read most all the 200+ pages of this thread [except the douche a few pages back with that ugly@$$ blue Mustang] and I am now part of the 'impacted user' instead of 'casual observer' category.
Just a few observations to share from my perspective:
- 20510 miles on my 2006 m/t when I took it in. It was 2 qts low.
- When they initated the 1000mi OC test, they did 'seal' the dipstick with some specialty tape. Dealer tells me to lay down 1000 miles as soon as possible and bring it back. After about 250 miles into it, the thing just reeked of burning oil. I opened the hood, and there's freakin oil all over the block, all over everything for that matter, and left overnight...a puddle on the garage floor. I called him the next day and asked if it absolutely needs 1000 miles down for the test, cuz there is absolutely something wrong here, so he tells me to bring it in. A small while later he calls me over and says "sort of a strange question for you, but, did you remove/tamper with the dipstick at all?". I said no, no way, I want this to be valid test, but I drive drive it hard, etc etc. So he goes on to tell me that either he, or his hi-performace tech, "secured the dipstick, but failed to secure the dipstick properly back into the hole"..essentially, the car was recently being run without ANY dipstick device in it [an open hole in the oil reservoir]. I just kind of looked at him...stunnned/silent, finally managing a "you're kidding, right?". He got sorta uncomfortable, saying something like this was previously a potential candidate for the engine replacement, but it is now likely further damaged, and it HAS TO be replaced, no further questions about it. Kind of a major freakin' OOOOPS there, but at least they're coming clean with it.
- Additionally, he agreed at no charge to remove/re-install my specific minor mods [underdrive pulley kit and CAI, as well as hooking to the hi-flow cats and catback] because they were 'quality upgrades endorsed by Nissan' and not cheap-o knock-offs.
- He said I should be good to go with brand-new engine by Friday [4 days from now] and sent me off in a '09 Altima loaner until then.
- I am considering throwing on some headers...but that's a different thread..
- Thanks all, will add myself into the tracking thread after motor break-in.

Hey thanks for the props. 06CPV35 has been picking up my slack here with continuing posts and advice. I pretty much have backed out and gone on with life in a 370Z. Anntennahead (John) also picked one up and both of us joke about the long 200 page thread here. I miss the peeps but not the oil consumption issue.
I was using Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 under Terry’s guidance and used oil analysis. At the end I was using some very expensive, not off the shelf oil, that did not get an oil analysis on because the car was sold privately before it was tested. But that alone will not do the trick. Terry has other tuning advise that will take the $$ for his consulting and advise. It’s worth every penny, even with his new rates.
I still have my oil on the new 370Z analyzed with Terry, and I am using the expensive oil on this as well. But Pennzoil got some real good results.
Cheers

Ok im new to all this and i know im going to sound stupid but i dont exactly understand the full problem...i am worried though because i just purchased an 06 manual enthusiast.....is the problem that the car is burning to much oil to fast so while normal is 1 quart every 3000 miles and the troubled Z's are burning 1 quart every 1000 miles?

His (Blake) previous screen names were: potophan01 and ZPimp
I am glad the dealer stepped up to the plate and took responsibility for their hose up. Good luck on the freshly built engine!
