I guess if you were on the extreme side and burning 1qt every 1k miles..or worse they might try to get in front of it. But why would they...there isn't a solution right now, so your doctor might as well diagnose you with colon polyps and say "we're working on it, gl in the meantime"

Lol... nice. Someone should reply and link him to this thread. Maybe if I'm bored enough I will.

I have an stock 06 base with approx 11500 miles, and I'm trying to determine if I have oil consumption. Yes, I've read all the thread.

I found out about this issue when I changed the oil myself in my Z for the first time, and it definitely seemed like I didn't get 5 quarts out. I suspect I got 2.5 or 3 quarts, but that is a bit of a guess because I changed my wife's oil at the same time as the Z. The oil change was in Jan 07. I have only driven 1500 mostly highway miles since. I checked a couple times, and the dipstick was down about 1/3-1/2 way between H and L 500 miles ago. I will check the oil tomorrow and see where it is.

Note, I am moderately aggressive with the car, but not too much. I also drive 80% highway miles, so it's not like I'm wailing on the car too much.

Questions:
1. If the dipstick is at L, is this one quart low, or more? I searched and this appears accurate, but I thought I read somewhere it was more than one quart.
2. I have a lot of black soot in the tailpipes, and on the bottom 1/3 of the exhaust tips. Is this an indicator of oil consumption? My 99 Mustang GT had no soot after 7 years and 60K+ miles, and never burned any oil (just a lot of gas).

I really like this car, and it would be a shame if I have an oil consumer. I guess I'll know a bit more tomorrow than today. If I think I have an oil burner, I'll take it in to Nissan for the oil consumption test.

Any advice you guys have would be appreciated.

Sounds like you may be joining the club. Low oil levels after short intervals and excessive black soot on the tailpipes are good indicators but the only way to be sure is to take it in. Take it to a dealer and let them know that it was low after 3000 miles. They will start and document the oil consumption in 1000 mile intervals. Keep all documents. Once you've gone through three intervals that indicated consumption, consider filing lemon law papaerwork. A couple of uson here have used the BBB Auto Line (www.bbb.org) to work through the issue with NNA. You will need to complete the Lemon Law notice in the back of your Lemon Law booklet and then file your claim online. Let me know if you have any questions.

The number is 1-800-NISSAN-1. Your call will accomplish very little in the grand scheme of things, but it is important to do so so they can document that you are experiencing issues.

My oil level keeps dropping slowly down the dipstick...plus I feel like my car has dysentery every time I look at the back tailpipes

Nissan ought trade me up to an RSX for all this headache...

I don't know what you are talking about... LOL... thanks.

Yeah, this thread is getting pretty big. I'd love to have a database or even a worksheet with everyone's consumption stats.

i found out i knew someone who works at the dealership i was taking my z to, and talked to him and he told me that the service guys wouldnt consider a plenum spacer, and a jwt pop charger as voiding warranty when it came to an oil consumption problem. however if my maf went bad or something, that would be a different story, he said.

Soooo i took the risk, and took it in, and they seemed pretty cool, started me on a oil consumption test, and told me they have had a few problems with the 06s burning oil, he said its because of the rings not seating properly. we'll see what happens, i only burned about a quart in about 3100 miles, car has about 6800 on it now.

2000 miles since last change and its a 3/4 between high and low. Is that good? H to L is one quart right? So i've consumed about 1/4 qts

Between H and L is supposed to be 1 quart. However, if you add one quart when at the L mark it will not reach he H mark, just the 3/4 full mark or so. So who knows. Also, I do not necessary recommend doing this, but at my last oil change i used the gunk engine cleaner + Restore oil for one quart with 4 quarts of RP 10W40 and I but STP gas tx + Prestone?? gas tx with a full tank of BP 93 octane gas. This was 1500 miles ago. The oil level is 1/2 way between the H and L mark and I have very little soot forming on the tailpipes. I would say the oil consumption is mildly improved but the soot on the tailpipes is much improved. I will consider repeating this at the next oil change at 3K miles from the last one.

Default Filed it with NNA

Called NNA and they gave me this number to call 1(800) 240-9924. Supposed to be specifically for the oil consumption issue.

Interesting. It goes directly to NNA consumer affairs without prompts.

Is it still possible to be burning oil if there is no blackness at all on the tail pipes?

Best way to tell is to check the dipstick.

I know my tailpipes are black, but I intentionally have not cleaned them since this all started to allow me to say "Hey, this is not normal! I have a problem!".

I guess I could clean them now that I have proved my point a few million times over.

I have put 1000 miles on the car since the oil change, and the oil level is between the L and the H. Is this normal?

(I still have no idea how to use the dipstick so this measurement was probably wrong anyway)
