Question unusual first gear whine

i have a VERY loud whine in first gear after 3grand. its so loud others tell me it sounds like im s/c. and if i am rolling at like 7-12 mph in neutral and put my clutch in and try to shift into 1st, its really hard to get it in 1st and it whine even w the clutch in. any ideas of why its doing this? and by the way this is my second tranny

Damn nissan transmissions. It's normal if its a whine, mine does it all the time in first. Also on a side note, if you are already rolling at 15mph you should drop it in second not first. If you have to go into first, please rev match then put it into first because otherwise you will grind the synchros and have a hard time getting it in there.

OMG. OK people. The whine is gear noise as your synchros are trying to rev-match for you while you are cramming it into first. First gear is a very short gear, and they have to spool up so they are spinning quickly in order to match up. It results in a whining sound, kinda like a muted type of sound you get from reverse in some cars. Same thing, short gear spinning quickly makes a whining sound. This is the second post recently that has dealt with shifting into first. Good rule of thumb, if it doesn't want to go into gear, it's for a reason. Don't force it.

No I gotcha, when in first gear it makes the whining noise. When I got my transmission replaced at 6k miles the new one was awesome. It didn't have a sound except for the typical cement truck noise. A few days later, the whining started in first and I went back into "Supercharged mode". hahah

Its annoying but its something we have to live with, I guess nissan though hey since they are only spending 30K on a Z they can deal with it.

It's still just gear whine. If it's abnormally loud, maybe you should check your tranny fluid.

My fluid was changed to redline a while back. I think its fine, as long as you have a aftermarket exhaust, you can ignore it.

One thing to remember, too, the tranny is basically next to your knee. You will hear some gear noise from it, especially with the Z's sound dampening

I think they are referring to the noise that is generated outside the vehicle. Usually when we drive next to a fixed tall object and the sound waves reflect off it and are sent back to us.
