So I have been looking at the chart that was put together and Penzoil platinum seems to be doing very well...

https://my350z.com/forum/7738021-post872.html

But my search for "penzoil platinum" didn't bring me to the individual posts where I could find what kind of use the test samples had been subjected to.

I have a bone stock motor, but I track it a lot, so I have been running M1 0-40 for a few years now.

I am wondering if there is a way to see if the samples are "apples to apples".

If M1 0-40 is popular for FI and track rats, the "average" numbers may be better than they look simply because the oil has been under more stress.

And if the Penzoil platinum samples all came from low stress samples, the numbers would skew better.

Is there any way to account for "stress levels" when comparing UOA's?

If Penzoil platinum 5-30 is producing these great UOA's with track/FI cars, it might be time for me to switch from M1 0-40.

Amsoil 5w-30 ASL

Nickel and fuel dilute is better.
Changes in this run were: Added PCV oil catch can and extra capacity oil pan.
Looks like ASL formula changed too (moly and boron) from 12-2009 run with ASL.
Anyone have a VOA on ASL? Would love to see that.

Not a VOA, but there's a little info here about what some of the numbers are.

Here is mine, I was nervous about it being that i built the engine myself and didn't want to know if it was bad plus kept forgetting to do it. BUt was pretty happy when I got the results

nothing fancy, I just use Valvoline Supreme conventional 10W40

^^ id change to a different oil. it cant be good for a 10w40 to have a viscosity of a 5w30 oil.

well I have another batch in there, I will probably send it out for test again and see. I really could not remember how many miles it had on that oil, also the oil cooler doesn't drain at oil change.

my main concern was with the condition of the engine, and with 25k miles on it since I built I am comforted that it is doing ok

^Your 1.8 fuel dilute is what sheared that 40 down to a 30. I wouldn't run that oil much longer than you did with that UOA.

Default Castrol Syntec 5w-30 UOA

The results below are for Castrol Syntec 5w-30 run for about 3,500 miles in an '03 G35 coupe. Half of those miles came from a cross-country road trip. Obviously any interpretation is welcome.

(Edit: After looking at the additive pack in this oil, I doubt that it's actually Syntec. It looks more like one of Castrol's Syntec blends. Unfortunately, I can't say for certain because I didn't change the oil myself. Take the results with a grain of salt.)

Yea Castrol Syntec is a Group III Oil, look at its MSDS its 70% Highly Refined Oil. German Castrol 0W-30 is a true synthetic.

But it still shows phenomenal UOA, so it works well.

Will, did you ever repost that chart that showed the different oils with green and red highlights for better or worse than the standard deviation?

I think the hosting site you used got rid of it... or maybe you deleted it on purpose? You may have already mentioned it in the thread but I didn't see it.

Thanks.

I took the last one down as there have been a good number of new UOA's submitted. I still need to add to them to my database in order to produce an updated comparison chart. When that is done, I'll have a new chart posted at the beginning of this thread so it's easy to find. In addition, I'll be sure to post on the chart that all the samples which are considered for comparison come from stock block VQ35DE engines, and are indicative to oil performance in that engine only, since the last chart seems to have been posted in car forum oil-pissing threads all over the internet (which was not the intended purpose). So, a disclaimer seems prudent for the updated one. Should be up in a week or two.

Here's mine after running Royal Purple for 5000 miles. Can anyone direct me on how to rectify the insoluble’s issue? My goal is to move to a better filter; Mobil 1 and switch to Pennzoil Ultra. Would Sea Foam in the crank case assist in cleaning up any sludge?

Bump for over 4 years of dropping oil knowledge. This forum should pay you a stipend!

LOL

Many thanks man. I have been running Penz Plat 10-30 in Virginia for 5-ish years. Every 3K change. I am now Supercharged and have been for about 25K miles. I need to finally do a sample to add to the mix.

Again, job well done. I know I owe you for all your hard work, so if you need me to run a sample on a new oil (Maybe the new Penz Ultra) or any oil for that matter.... just let me know.

Cheers!

What filter did you use for this run, and was the oil really 5W-20?

I doubt there's sludge in 36K miles unless there's been some history of neglect with regular oil changes.

No it was a typo it was 5W-30 and filter appeared to be OEM but longer than stock. My independent Z shop did the oil change, their big fans of RP??, but I’m doing my own oil changes now, hence the move to the Mobil 1 filter and Pennzoil Ultra. I purchased the car in January and it appears to be well maintained but the oil report indicated the possibility of sludge so I’d like to address that with the next oil change this Saturday.

Many thanks for the reply

silly question, but I have an opportunity to buy some Syntec 0w-30 2007 at a discount. 3 years in a bottle doesn't degrade oil if it's not opened right?
