This weekend i changed my oil to royal purple 5w-30 and ever since then i have seen some power loss. i have also been smelling what seems to smell like a burning oil smell from the car, sometimes it faint.. after a quick fly through some gears it is a more pronounced smell. i also changed the oil filter and changed the crush washer. Has anybody experenced something like this before when they have changed there oil or do you think i have got a bigger problem then i might expect. there were only 5 quarts of oil put in and by the dipstick it seems to read between low and high... 2000rpms is 60psi.. any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thank you.

As far as the power loss is concerned, how the heck can you tell? Is it that pronounced that your butt dyno can actually detect any changes in power?

As for the burning smell when under hard acceleration, THAT I can vouch for.

I thought it may had something to do with the fact that I recently had to take my turbo off and go back to stock and that maybe there was a leak of some kind but I never correlated that to the oil I use.

When I thought about what you said, I had never experienced this burning smell with my previous oil which was Mobil 1.

Interesting.

ok, the powerloss was that pronounced.. today i reset the ecu and drove for a half hour and got the power back... i dunno if this is just covoring up the problem.. i just had my girlfriend rev the car for me and i stood behind it and there DEFINATLY is oil burning.. alot of blue smoke. i think i have more problems now then i think. UNLESS i have too much oil in there and its burning off?? is that possible??

If thats the case then you are burning oil my friend. If you see blue and white smoke coming out of your tail pipes that means you might have a consumption problem. Bring your car to the dealership to have an oil consumption test done.

+1, def. take it to the dealership and get an oil consumption test done. Friend of mine had a problem quite similar. GL with it!

I know that I know this already but I just wanted to ask again: If you ARE burning oil, it would be WHITISH smoke coming out the back, right?

i just check the dipstick and on the oppisite side of the marking(backside) ive been gettin a constant reading that is alot above the high marking.. but on the side with the markings im getting a reading that is right at the low marking... does it matter which side i get the reading off of?? because the backside is getting a much clearer reading. if the oil is that high will it burn off in the exhaust causing my symtoms? thank you for everyones help thusfar!

When I had the turbo on, and I would get on it hard, a huge plume of dark black soot-like smoke would comeo ut the back similar to how diesel pick-up trucks make smoke when they accelerate.

I figured it was because I asked my tuner to do a very conservative tune with a 9.6 AFR at WOT and the fact that I was COMPLETELY catless.

I don't believe anyone has ever told me of whitish-bluish-greyish smoke but since I have ONE of the symptoms of the OP (the distinct smell) I wanted to check on the smoke color thing.

Yes. Done it 3 times so far in different cars. What are you going with? Standard RP or XPR?

Not sure. I've been thinking about doing it, haven't done much research yet.
