I've had my 07 for a month now, 700 miles. Base model just to let you know. It's my first sports car/stick shift, I'm going to describe the sounds my car makes.

1. Shifts are a little rough when it's not warmed up yet. Sometimes when I push the clutch down, it makes a little noise. After a couple of blocks of driving, everything smooths out.

2. At low speeds, low rpms (below 4k rpm), gears 1 and 2 maybe even 3. I hear this whining sound when decelarating, I would describe it as a spaceship landing softly like in the movies. Some of the guys in this forum stated that it's the fuel injectors.

(edit)3. Forgot to say the shifter vibrates a little, not alot which I would think is normal for any manual trans. sports car.

I've never had the clutch stick to the floor. I think this car drives like a dream and I'm very happy with it. I don't feel like there's a problem and these sounds seem and feel very normal.

1. Pretty normal. The transmissions are noisy and if it's cold in your area, it could be a little tougher to shift when cold. It's really hot where I'm at (110ºF today) so I my car stays pretty warm all the time and I don't have any shifting issues at all.

2. Could it be transmission/gear noise? I hear some of that in my car, pretty normal.

3. Normal.

i dont think you are supposed to do that buddy. you should ONLY downshift from 2nd to 1st at lower speeds like 1~5mph. good luck there!!

wow ! most posts in this thread are the reason the z tranies are getting a bad rep….

my 05 had a perfect 6-speed, and my 07 just got better.

I don't see how any of the points raised here give the Z gearboxes a bad rep. All gearboxes exhibit traits similar to this at one level or another. If they didn't rattle some when cold, by the time they were hot they would be binding.

A lot of the noise from the gearbox on a rear wheel drive car can be attributed to the location of the gearbox. It is behind the firewall and underneath the passenger compartment. If it was a front wheel drive car, the sounds made would be more isolated from the driver.

I doubt that if you searched a bit for statistics on the topic that the Z's gearbox is anymore problematic that any other in the industry. If 15 or 20 years ago you had a 300hp car and it had gearbox issues, very few people would have considered it unusual. I know that everyone is always searching for more power, but 300hp is still a pretty healthy amount.

Default it's not ok, is the OP here a Nissan rep.

THe noise is not normal and just because everyone has it does not mean that we should just eat it. First of all if anything is out of balance that is connected to the crankshaft, it will hurt the long term life of the motor. Thats why people use harmonic balancers. I have an 07 with the neutral rattle and it is so bad (even after they replaced the trans) that it throws my idle around. and I think it is also setting off the knock sensor. I mean it's brand new and it sounds like a peice of crap when I come to a stoplight. The other thing is that it is heat related, (at least for me) because it gets so much worse as it heats up. Once again let me reiterate IT IS NOT NORMAL!. A brand new car like this should have a perfect idle at any temp. WAKE UP NISSAN! I will probably have to file for lemon law if they can not fix it this time. Also if they can not fix it I will have to post the noise on Youtube so that everyone can see and hear what Nissan considers normal.

I also have an 07 base man. and what you wrote is EXACTLY how it is for my car. the rough shifts go away after like a minute of driving so no biggy. Seems to be normal for this car at least. Also my first standard so can't comment on how other cars are.

The noise is normal, and yes, because every manual transmission in just about every mass produced BRAND NEW car exhibits the exact same type of noise, eat it.

Your car has been worked on so while you may be having problems of your own, the noise being discussed at idle is 100% normal and does not indicate a problem. This topic has been discussed to death. I have posted numerous quotes from reputable sources on the issue. google search gear rollover noise. Read. Learn.

Default my noise is not normal

I think the problem is that Nissan dumbed down the clutch with that dual mass flywhhel to make it more streetable and easier for retarts to drive, and the payoff for that is the horrible noise that is my life right now, and if it is normal why does every dealership I go to say it is not normal after hearng it, and why does my dealership keep replacing transmissions. Beacuse they know it is not right. The fact of the matter is that their is plenty of sports cars out their with way more horsepower, or less horse power that make no noises at all. As a mechanical engineer I can also tell that any mechanical issue that gets worse as it gets hotter means something is operating beyond it structual integrity and will eventually fail, and it will probably fail the day my warranty ends. I would also like to clarify that the noise I am hearing is not gearlash or a throw out bearing spinning, both those noises are audible at any time the vehicle is running, and is normal. No, the noises I am hearing are far worse, I beleive that heat saturation from the exaust and engine is just to much for this clutch and for thirty thousand bucks thats pathetic. Even people with no mechanical inclinations at all insatntly reconize the noise as a problem, it's embarrising.
