Default DIY catch can question...not one of the normal questions

I installed the catch can that is described in this thread: https://my350z.com/forum/engine-drivetrain-and-forced-induction-diy/237059-homemade-catch-can.html

I got the parts at Home Depot. My question is about the catch can itself. I got the one that is listed in the DIY post but mine has a valve at the bottom of the can. According to the directions, it is there so you can drain the water out of it when it is used as an air compressor filter. It has an arrow on it. Down is to empty the can and up is to supposedly close it. I have it in the closed position, arrow pointing up, but I am getting suction through it. Even when I turn it down I get suction. Is this ok? Should I get some kind of rubber nipple to cover the hole? Or is this just the wrong can and I need to get a different one?

Here are some pics to help explain what I am talking about.

In those pics, the valve is open. General rule for ANY valve is that when the handle is parallel with the output, the valve is open. When the handle is perpendicular to the output, the valve is closed. You need to turn the handle 90 degrees.

I'll give that a shot. I can say that the valve turns too easily. If I put it horizontal I doubt it will stay that way while driving.

Get a new one. With the valve closed you should be getting NO suction from the nipple at all.

Good luck.

Try turning it clockwise a few turns. Maybe it's backed out.

I tried turning it every which way. No matter what direction there is some suction. Also, I set it horizontal before I started the car. After I started it the valve had turned almost 30 degrees. Should I get another identical one and just switch the cans or should I try something different? Is it ok to drive the car with the way it is or should I not drive it until there is no suction?

Just get a vacuum cap and call it a day instead of getting a new one.

That's what I was thinking. I assume I can get those at Autozone or a similar auto parts store. I will check tomorrow.

I have the bigger Home Depot catch can. On my install, I JB Welded the drain valve to completely seal it. It has worked perfectly.

I got the small one from Home Depot... it had a black rubber cap on it... all the ones I've seen do too... I would exchange it for another at HD - possibly someone needed the cap and took it out of the package you bought?

I found a black rubber cap at work. I cut it to length and put it over the nipple. I think it will work. I will post some pics tonight when I get home.

Here is a pic of the rubber cap I put on. I think it will work. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...n/DSC02603.jpg

I am going to drive the car tomorrow to see how if this catch can catches any oil.

I put some stainless steel mesh in the bottom of mine (for the oil to condense on). It catches more oil now with the mesh than without... Actually, without the mesh it barely caught any oil...

I am going to pick up some mesh today to put in the catch can. I read your post in the DIY post about adding Chore Boy.
I am catching some oil even without the mesh. I've driven less than a hundred miles since I installed it and I already have about 1/2 an inch of oil in it.

The rubber cap doesn't work. Oil is seeping out. Not a lot but it shouldn't leak at all. I even super glued the valve in the horizontal position and then super glued a new rubber cap on. Even after doing all that it still seeps oil. I am gonna go to Lowe's to see if they have a different can that doesn't have this BS valve.

It's still seeping! I went to Home Depot and Lowes last night. They both carry the identical one but under different name brands. I called Campbell Hausfield, they manufacture them. They said they no longer make one without a valve.

Should I pick up another one to see if it doesn't leak? Or should I try some kind of epoxy to stop this one from leaking?

HD don't sell them anymore, even ordered online since they have it in the pix and they still sent me the new one with the valve then the other day I went to Autozone and found one (Campbell Hausfeld air compressor )version and I start jumping for joy and people were looking at me like I'm crazy Or one other way you can do is put some epoxy inside just to cover it so it wont leak.

I got it from this store.
