does the Z engine have a harmonic balancer a.k.a. tuned mass damper?
I've taken a peek down the front of the motor and can't see a separate harmonic balancer and it would appear that the stock crank pulley is not a 2 piece design with rubber absorbing ring....
makes me think there is no balancer on the VQ

yeah I hear all this about "internally balanced" as well...
a balanced crank doesn't mean jack against harmonic distortions. a mass tuned damper cancels out these harmonic distortions at specified resonate frequencies...
an internally balanced engine is great.. but the crank can still suffer from harmonic distortion...
I'm pulling my pulley off this week to install an UR crank pulley... I'll see if it's a 2 piece then I guess...

yeah... I've seen that pic and it's not really showing much. The damper ring is only about 4mm thick on most damper/pulleys. On our pulley it's likely that the damper ring could be recessed between the inner and out pulleys.
That shot shows the inner side of the pulley which could very likely be one piece with the outer pulley attached by a bonded damper ring which could only be seen up close from the other side.
