Default Rapid clicking sound Not sure where or what

Guys, I'm having this rapid clicking sound coming from the either the tranmission (clutch) or maybe even the valve area. Kind of hard to pin point. It really sounds like more of a plastic clicking sound, other than metal. But I highly doubt it's plastic. It doesn't start at a cold startup. More after it has warmed up. Very noticeable at around the 1500 to 2000 RPM's. When you rev it, it gets faster, but not louder. And eventually can't be heard over engine/road noise. Hard to tell, but it is defiantly coming from behind the back of the motor. Just can't pin point it. Hard to discribe in words.

I want to say it's more in the transmission. Due to sometimes when enaging the clutch it will trigger the sound. And when I disengage it will sligtly stop. But start back when you rev the motor some. Sorry guys, this is the best I can discribe. Maybe one of you guys have had it happen. Thanks for any help.

I would start by eliminating exhaust leaks. Either use seafoam or go to an exhaust shop and fill it with smoke. I preferr seafoam so the car is running and you can fill the entire engine with smoke. Easy to tell if the clicking or ticking sound is a head gasket failure. The other option is to take a 3 foot hose and hold it up to your ear and keep moving around the engine bay. When you here a louder sound...you found it. O...injectors make noise (tick) when they go bad

Allthough I really want to say it sounds like an input shaft bearing unfortunatly. Go to sears, get one of those automotive stethescopes, they are one of the most handy tools you can ever buy, and they're only like $15. For locating exhaust & intake leaks they are my 1st weapon of choice, pull off the saucer shaped part & probe, and use just the hose, you will be amazed.

I can go ahead and tell you, buy no means is it an exhaust leak. I did think that it may be the input shaft also. I think I'm going to aply some Seafoam to see what it does. I only want to try one thing at a time, to make sure I find the problem. I will be changing my clutch here in the next month or so. If I had to, I could do it ASAP.

Also, I'd like to add some more info I found today. When cruising at in first or second gear without throttle applied there is no sound. As soon as apply the throttle, the noise comes in. I'll hold it at about 1500 to 1800 Rpm's and it remain constant. As soon as I lift my foot off the throttle the sounds becomes a faster pace ticking. After a few seconds and the Rpm's drop to idle, (still in gear) the sound goes away. That's while in gear. Now at idle sitting in driveway, the noise is always there as a constant. Rev the motor, it gets faster pace, but not louder. Wonder if it's the dual mass flywheel?

When it's constant @ idle, does it go away when you press in the clutch?

No, the sound would still be there. But what makes me sick, it's been doing it for three days. I took it to Sharif (Forged Performance) today and it did it all the way there. Until I actually got there there was no hint of anything. Makes me feel like a dumba**. Sharif said it must of fixed itself when he just looked at it. LOL. I guess he's that good. So I don't know what to say. Drove back home and still everything seems great. Thanks for helping though.

Dont feel alone bud, the same thing is happening to my car EXACTLY the way you describe it. The noise occurs between 1300 to 2000 rpm's for me... I put it on my lift to check it out and the noise is coming from the back of the transmission. While it is in the air, I put it in 2nd and I can create the noise every time between 1000 to 2000 rpm's. Its not backlash because it only occurs duirng acceleration. I thought it might be my u-joints, so I called NISSAN to buy some.... they dont sell them. They said they never had to sell that part yet. I'm frustrated. This weekend, I'm going to reinstall my original clutch to see if that was the problem.

Yeah, your engine was purring like an OEM kitten when it arrived. Must have been a 350z gremlin.

I guess no one put a couple zip-ties on your drive shaft than. That is always good for a laugh.

Yea, that's always funny. I really like doing that to my buddies jacked up trucks. Again Sharif, thanks for taking the time to check it out. Much appreciated.
