What year VQ?
I bought a used VQ35 engine he told me its from a 04 Z is there any way to tell for sure what year it is maybe by a serial number on the engine somewhere?

Non revup = 03-04 MT
Non revup = 03-06 AT
Revup = 05-06 MT
HR = 07-08 MT & AT
To the OP's question. It probably doesn't matter what 'year' the motor is (as long as it isn't an HR). Just do a compression check on it and general inspection and you should be fine.

Ahhh, since you're doing a conversion, you might wanna check this out.

FYI, The bottom ends are all the same. Only the heads changed from the non-revup to the revup. Not sure about the compatibility matrix for ECU's though...

Sorry to hijack your thread with a noob question but what's the difference between a non-revup & revup engine? As in is "revup" a bonus or a drawback, or just another way they made them?

I think you'll need the vehicle's VIN in order to determine which year it was. . .
The difference between a non revup and a revup is the heads.
The revup has both intake and exhaust cam timing, a higher redline, higher horsepower but less torque. You can tell by looking at the heads, you'll see 2 sets of circles on the front of each head where the cams are. CR, bore and stroke are the same for both engines.
Non rev ups have a single circle on each of the heads. . .
Determine which engine you have first, then get the matching ecu. . .
not sure if you could use a revup ecu on a non revup vq without throwing codes. . .

Pretty sure its a non-revup so its a 03 or 04? I just didn't know if I could use 03 or 04 ecu or not or if it had to be the same exact year as the engine. I won't be able to get the vechile VIN it was pulled from a wrecked Z and I bought it off someone second hand.

Also matching these up doesn't apply to aftermarket standalone ECUs like the Haltech, right?
