Non revup = 03-04 MT
Non revup = 03-06 AT
Revup = 05-06 MT
HR = 07-08 MT & AT

To the OP's question. It probably doesn't matter what 'year' the motor is (as long as it isn't an HR). Just do a compression check on it and general inspection and you should be fine.

I think it does matter what year I'm dropping this into my S13 and I need to use the ECU from the same year as the engine

Ahhh, since you're doing a conversion, you might wanna check this out.

https://my350z.com/forum/na-builds/350513-vq-powered-s14.html

FYI, The bottom ends are all the same. Only the heads changed from the non-revup to the revup. Not sure about the compatibility matrix for ECU's though...

Sorry to hijack your thread with a noob question but what's the difference between a non-revup & revup engine? As in is "revup" a bonus or a drawback, or just another way they made them?

ah thanks I actually saw that thread and talked to that guy a few times, mainly I'm concerned about the compatibility with the ECU I want to buy the correct ecu/bcm for the engine I have. The serial I pulled off the engine is 642503A-VQ35 if anyone can tell me what that means or what year I'd appreciate it

I think you'll need the vehicle's VIN in order to determine which year it was. . .

The difference between a non revup and a revup is the heads.

The revup has both intake and exhaust cam timing, a higher redline, higher horsepower but less torque. You can tell by looking at the heads, you'll see 2 sets of circles on the front of each head where the cams are. CR, bore and stroke are the same for both engines.

Non rev ups have a single circle on each of the heads. . .

Determine which engine you have first, then get the matching ecu. . .

not sure if you could use a revup ecu on a non revup vq without throwing codes. . .

Pretty sure its a non-revup so its a 03 or 04? I just didn't know if I could use 03 or 04 ecu or not or if it had to be the same exact year as the engine. I won't be able to get the vechile VIN it was pulled from a wrecked Z and I bought it off someone second hand.

the year doesnt matter, you just need to get an ECU for a non revup z and it will work

What's a BCM? (Not brake master cylinder obviously!)

Also matching these up doesn't apply to aftermarket standalone ECUs like the Haltech, right?

I own an 05 mt in a base model and it is a Non revup motor.

It does everything that the ECU doesn't do:
Windows
Locks
ABS
TCS
Cruise
Climate
Anti Theft
etc...

You should have another look. If you truly have a non-revup in an 05, then you don't have MT, you'll be AT.

Dat's jus how Nissan rolls yo.

Here's what they look like:

More than the heads changed -- the non-RevUp ECU will throw ABS codes when left-foot-braking. The RevUp ECU does not.
