Started working on the motor today, swapped the OEM headers for the Impuls. I love working on newer engines, nothing is stripped, rusted or broken (save for a coolant pipe crimped during shipping).

Next up I was going to change out the shifter assembly for a custom one that shaves 4" of the extension, needed for the shifter to line up properly to the S14. . .

Looks like a fun build...

I see that you're planning to use a UTEC. Does that mean that you plan to use the drive by wire setup that comes with the VQ35DE?

I've seen other people with engine swaps keep the throttle cable from the existing car and use a Haltech with good results. Not sure how a UTEC will work out. Keep us informed, though... this looks like an interesting project.

^^ I'm hoping to keep the drive-by-wire system. . .don't see the point in going back . . .

I've had some issues with the x-members i received from vqswap.com. . .the s14 engine x-member bolts are 31 1/2 inches apart, the crossmember they sent me is 34 1/2 inches wide. . .not sure what it's off of. . .

I tested it out to see if the mounts themselves lined up with the engine, and they did. . .so it's just the overall width of it. . .

engine crossmember with mounts:

took me a few mins to realize it was too wide. . .a frustrating way to end your day. . .

in the engine bay:

Size: 125.1 KB

"mounted" to the block. . .one thing that I was a little disappointed about was that no hardware came with it, have to run around and look for nuts and bolts. . .

Contacted Andrew @ vqswap and he claims this x-member came directly out of an S14. . .but agreed to have another x-member made up with one that I will supply him. There's someone here in town that has one so I'll compare the 2 and put pics up. . .

Have you contacted Andrew at VQswap yet? I wasn't too pleased with the service I received from them (bought the shifter thing, AEM EMS, driveshaft, & harness from him) but if you call him you should get answers regarding the crossmember & hopefully get the correct one in decent time. It's been 4 months & I'm still waiting to get my harness back.

Yeah I don't think I'll be dealing with him ever again or sending people to him. . .he's never called me back regarding my issues, after i've left my name and number and reason for calling countless times. . .it's always me chasing after him. . .

I bought an s14 x-member from someone in the states as well, and he was bored so he DROVE it to san-dimas auto (3 hours away) and dropped it off personally. Andrew said he'd get on it right away. . .

you need some high compression pistons, and rods with a longer stroke. because just heads, cams, and headers won't get you to the 300whp mark.

did you get the 31mm valveseat or the 32mm?

doesnt need high compression pistons with those heads. but some forged stock compression pistons & forged rods would help. you thought about getting the whole rotating assembly on the bottom end balanced? really if you spent that much money on those nismo goods just go ahead and have the bottom end built & balanced, youre gonna need to have it revving pretty high to hit 300 whp. you seriously have nismo heads, nismo spec 2 cams, and nismo titanium springs on the way? can I has some moneys!? lol

yeah they should be in at the end of the month, Nismo says they're almost done this batch. . .

I will be getting the bottom end rebuilt and balanced, new rods and pistons. . .after it's been in the bay, mocked up and everything measured it'll be going in to a local block shop. . .
