Checking the oil
This is going to sound like a retarded question but how do you guys check the oil?
Seriously, first off it's at a wierd angle. Not only that but it seems like I can't get an accurate reading. I guess the dip stick scrapes the side so oil get all over the stick comming up so I can never tell the level of oil I have.
The reason I ask is cause I'm getting the knocking sound from my engine, from previous expirences it was cause it needed oil but I just had an oil change about 2K miles ago. So I'm kinda worried about the whole oil consumption thing. Thanks in advance!

Let car sit on level ground for about 30mins. Pull stick all the way out, with a rag in one hand. Wipe the dipstick, reinsert, then pull out again. Rest the tip level and horizontal across the rag in your hand. This will give you a reading. Look for the part of the oil that is solid across the entire dipstick. This is your level. Don't worry about the oil residue on the side of the stick that may be higher. That's just crap that scraped off the sidewalls, as you're pulling it out. You oil mark should lie midway between the etched marks on the dipstick. It's ok to be higher towards the top end. Just don't let it go low. If it is, obviously add some oil...
