Default Burned rubber smell... softer clutch :(

Hey guys!

So last night I floored my car in first and I guess when I tried putting it in 2nd gear it didn't go all the way in and I over-revved the **** out of my car and clutch got really soft and burnt rubber smell was horrible... I was about 5 minutes away from my house so I drove with the burning smell and today when I got in the car and drove it around there is no more burning rubber smell but when the clutch feels a lot softer and when I press it down all the way I think I hear some clicking noise...

Can you please tell me what did I mess up on my car and if I should go to stealership or some other reputable mechanic (wondering if that would void my warranty)?

Please help out

by the way I have less than 6,000 miles on my car and I never really abused the clutch before... maybe redlined it in first 3-4 times all together.

Clutch slipping. Its kinda normal with the Z that is why you see soo many threads about clutch on this forum. This is not considered warranty work but you can try. You can either deal with the occasional clutch slip or do what i did and get a racing clutch kit and flywheel while you are at it.

you need a clutch.......the clutch is the wear and replace item.......the oem flywheel is just its contact surface.....which can be resurfaced at a good machine shop and used again..........

only advantage of getting a racing flywheel is their light weight.......

just getting a flywheel wont fix anything..

like 13ringinheat said.....your clutch is slipping..........i know first hand how the oem clutch feels and smells as it goes out... i purchased the jimwolf clutch and love it... stiffer/stronger and to me, very confidence inspiring due to its never fail engagement, on/off type in comparison to oem.....

im NA still by the way...and paid something like 375 or so for jimwolf shipped...i dont remember really..

Hitting the rev limiter doesn't equal over-revving your motor. The only way you can really over-rev the motor is by mechanically doing so, i.e. dropping it into 2nd instead of 4th while going 100mph, etc. I highly doubt your clutch is bad at 6000miles unless you never take your foot off of it. If you slip your clutch at high rpm's it will smell. It's probably your brain tricking you into thinking your clutch is bad.

Thanks for replies guys. That is pretty good price... would it be really expensive to get it installed though... how many hours of labor approximately?

gene: I think I slipped it at high rpms and that's why it smelled really bad. I don't know if my clutch is bad, it's engaging good but the only thing that's different since the incident is that the clutch pedal feels softer (I don't have to push it as hard and when I'm taking my foot off of it feels softer). I guess I can have somebody experienced drive it to see if the clutch is bad.

^ if you still can drive with no issue, i will just keep drive them. It happend once, doesn't mean that you have to replace them.

True. But why does my clutch pedal feel softer? My last car was 06 Acura TL and the clutch was reallll soft and once I got my 350 I saw a big difference in clutch feel... well now my clutch feels more like TL's than what it used to be... so it's kind of worrying me why it feels different... Also when I press the pedal down I think I hear a click.

^ if you that worry, check with dealer under warranty. It is really hard to give you advice without looking at your car or drive it, so it's better stop by local dealer and ask them.

When i got my Z, i felt lot diff in clutch. But now it's too light to me

Since your clutch is still fairly new, I would also look into getting the pedal adjusted as well. Something similar happened to me, and my clutch felt really mushy after. It wouldn't start grabbing until the pedal was almost all the way out. After i got it adjusted, it was still a little softer than before, but besides that it was fine. I think oncce the clutch is broken in, it should feel softer and smother (less grabby.) So I would say take it to get the clutch pedal adjusted and see if that works.

Is that free? I'll stop by my dealership after work today to get it looked at.

You could look into having the line bled too. My buddy's car has this problem, and there is an air bubble in the line. Also, it could just be the fact your clutch is breaking in. I just replaced my clutch with a ACT Heavy Duty Street clutch, and it was so stiff when i first got it in, now it is starting to loosen up and feel much better.

Also, when my clutch went out, I talked to them about having it replaced under warranty, and they said it was only covered for 12 mo or 12k miles. So, you are still in the window (considering your purchase date). Take it to the dealer, have them look at it, they shouldn't charge you anything if you go to a good dealer.

Thanks for the good news man!

Can anyone else confirm that clutch is covered for 12 months or 12k miles? I bought my car in April so I should be ok

Not that the dealership will actually tell you that your clutch is out if they suspect they will have to do the warranty work... Lol. Stealerships around here are pretty shady.

A bad clutch is easy to diagnose. It slips. Drive 60 MPH. Accelerate. Does the RPM and speed increase. If yes then clutch is OK.
