Hi,
My Z 2004 has tomei cams 272 degrees but the lifters are the standard. It is said that when changing the cams you simultaneously change the valve springs as well which i have, but the lifters are the hydraulic standard which should be changed with the tomei solid lifters, otherwise the standard can't stand the work overload. In the mean time i hear from the engine bay the sound of the lifters a bit more loud than from a normal car. My engineer is telling me that the sound is normal because of the cams degrees. What do you think should i replace the standard lifters with solid?or not?and the sound of the lifters is it acceptable to be a bit more than the normal?

Do you know for a fact that the Z utilizes a hydraulic lifter?

Do you perhaps have a diagram of the Z's valvetrain to maybe help illustrate to you why they don't offer a solid lifter option for the VQ engine?

i talked to the guy who is in charge of some tomei products from the website i already posted and told me that our engine wears hydraulic lifters, which are fine, but for people like me who use tomei camshafts with 272 degrees is a must because the standard lifters won't last for too long...this is why i possibly hear a small noise now from the standard lifters..i will possibly go on buying them..since i am going to keep the car for a while..but i have to make sure that the sound i hear is from the standard lifters and not something else..because you never know..

Did you set the valve lash when you installed the cams or did you just install the cams?

don't know that..the engineer who did that is experienced..and has built some skylines and so on..he has good reputation..

the car has 67,000 km and was built at about 30,000 km, if it was that i think it would come out a lot sooner..what do you think?

describe the sound, im assuming it isnt the normal cam lopey sound if they have been on there for 30k km. is it a loud ticking or *clacking*?

it sounds more of a clicking..when the engine gets worm it almost stops..you can only hear it when driving through walls or among cars on traffic...and still you have to know what it is to understand that it comes from your car..

my point is this: we do not have lifters. And we certainly do not have hydraulic lifters.

People use different terms for the same thing. Lifters, buckets..etc..etc.
Your stock lifters are fine, as long as you arent running a rediculously stiff valve spring.
When we run Cosworth heads, we usually upgrade to the SuperTech billet lifters, as the stockers are not as durable, and the heavy springs can damage the camshaft/lifter. Joe and I took one for the team on this...a long while ago.

Even with 280 degree camshafts, and lots of lift, we still run just an upgraded spring...that's it. Stock lifters.

ok the guy replied me and told that tomei hasn't got any solid lifters for the VG eingine..so if i have to replace the lifters i have to go with stock..the big question and here is where i need the advice of someone who knows about the lifters..
So, i hear the lifters clacking more when cold, less when the engine is worm...(or almost stops) the question is...will that affect the engine to cause more problems?should i live it as is?or should i replace the lifters??because once you open the engine you have to do a variety of things like cleaning the fuel injectors and so on..

In case i need to replace my lifters..is there any shop that you know that sells them??
