Default Help with the clutch

My clutch started slipping few days ago. The mechanic said that I need a new clutch. He want $950 for parts and labor.
Is it a fair price?

I want to take my car to the track sometime. Is it a good idea to install a high performance clutch? If so, what brand and dealer do you recommend?

I mention to the mechanic that I may bring a performance clutch for the track, he said I should consider a new flying wheel as well.
Do I need a new flying wheel if I install a performance clutch?

If I bring my parts, the mechanic said he will not guarantee his work.
Is it a common practice by mechanics?

My car is 2004 350Z convertible touring edition.
It is my first performace car, and I have never been on a track or a road course.

Thanks of your help.

1. If your car is fairly stock, OEM clutch/flywheel are just fine.

2. It would be a good idea.

3. It is common practice. And in some cases, there are shops that will NOT install parts brought in by the customer.

4. Learn to drive your car before thinking about upgrading components.

$950 parts and labor is fair.
ACT makes good performance clutches
AND, its not a flying wheel...
You don't have to buy one, but it does help with performance.

Thank you guys for the responses.

The mechanic called me back with $527 labor and $460 for Nissan clutch, and he said he doesn't know whether I need a flywheel or not.

Stillen Performance offered me an organic clutch (street friendly) and a flywheel combo for $978. So, the difference between an OEM clutch and a Stillen clutch+flywheel is about $500.

I don't know whether it is worth it or not.
Any suggestions?

The reason I am thinking of after market clutch is my current clutch need replacement, so it is good time to do it now.

Please convince me either way.
Thanks

Ask your mechanic if he can just resurface your current flywheel.

Im getting mine done on Wed at a Nissan dealer. I just bought my own clutch disc for $80 and was told that it is a 6 hour job. I'll let you know what my bill is.

Why? Do know how many mechanics are listed in the NE section that are willing to tackle any job, including me. Prices are way cheaper too.

6 hours to put in a clutch disk? I can drop the tranny and put the disk in 3 hours.
