Default Finally fully built ZR underway!

Last July I blew a huge hole in the block while at the track running the Qtr. It was my best time at 12.8X on street tires. She let go right at the end in 4th and a trap speed of 113.XX. About 17K miles on the Eng in total with ~8K miles FI. I had 3-Lapping days and 4-5 days with a few runs down the qtr with very little spirited driving in between.

So after a lot of thinking of whether to re-build it or part it out and take my losses I am getting her re-built. Thanks to the many members for posting their experiences good and bad I hope to have put a very solid build together.

For Starters I picked Injected Performance to build my Eng. Everything I read on here about Injected and the support Hal provides on the tuning helped to make the choice. Of course there are a number of other great shops but location was on my mind in case I wanted to run my car down to Hal to check things out.

Being in Ontario Canada selecting the right shop to install and tune my baby was harder. We don’t have a lot of shops that have done near as much work with the VQ35 as there are in the US. After talking to and visiting a number of shops I am partnering with Sasha at SG-Motorsports. I say partnering because I believe you need to feel comfortable and confident with the shop you are ultimately working with.

We trailer the ZR to SG yesterday. The Eng. was ordered from Injected back in Dec and is the build is underway.

Ultimately it’s my choice and budget as to what parts I select but if you guys don’t mind checking to see if I am missing anything that you would add. (It’s probably too late to change any internals but I think it’s pretty good) I am really way over budget already but don’t want to miss something that would cause an issue after spending this much already. I hope we can get 500WHP and would be very pleased if we were in the mid to high 500WHP range. BTW I don’t want to run test pipes because the law can get pretty sticky up here and I don’t need the hassle.

I will add my list sorry for the long post,

Very nice build list..don't forget some 1 step colder plugs and you may want to consider using the Evans coolant.

Move this thread to the FI section and you'll get more feedback.
Good luck on your build.

Very nice list!

What are your goals for this build:
HP Goal
Purpose (auto-x, 1/4, street, shows, everything)
Is this your DD?

You will likely max out the Walbro 255 way before you reach your potential with the other components.

I thought APS was not using BB turbos any longer... I also remember them being 2871 center sections inside of a 2860 housing or some hybrid like that - but that was the old turbos. Maybe I am misremembering though... Are they using true GT2871 turbos now?

Yes DD on nice weather days and a few fun days at the track. Will look into a roll bar more seriously next year.

I am just assuming they ar GT2871 as that is what I got from some other posts on here. The APS kit was new in June 2007 so whatever they used then I guess is what I have.

you can't use progress sways with the HKS exhaust I don't think - never tried that exact combo, but they tend to not fit with true dual exhausts, only pipe units (like an OEM type)

can't use the ATI crank pulley and a UR pulley together it's one or the other. Unless you plan to just use the UR accessory pullies (dress up only)

Good point on the pulleys. Probably better to just keep the OEM pulleys.

A lot of this suff was already on the Stock block sorry I didn't clairify that. Haltech EMS, CJ Fuel system, Injectors, ATI pulley and Long block all new.

ATI crank pulley will be new and I will remove the UR underdrive crank pulley. Will the other UR pulleys be able to stay or will these also need to be swaped back to stock? I like the chome finish .

The Progress rear sways are a really tight fit. There was only maybe a 1/4 inch between the HKS. We can check again for any wear when its on the hoist thanks for reminding me.

you can use the accessory pullies, they are the same diameter as stock. The ATI pulley is significantly underdriven vs stock, so new belts will be needed. I have the same ATI on my own car...awesome piece

good stuff if the rear sway fits - that would be the first true dual that I'm aware of it working with

^^ hey bovi

We have lot's of very good mechanics for the VQ here in Ontario as well.

The combination of Great Mechanic, Excellent tuner with High WHP Turbo Nissans and other cars, experience and confidence with Haltech EMS, fellow 350Z enthusiast, 350Z Race Car driver, Good Clean busy shop, Already working with Injected performance on things, all added up to selecting SG-Motorsports.

The biggest missing link with other local shops was there experience or my impresion of there confidence in tuning with the Haltech and Haltech was the only EMS I was ultimately interested in using.
Not that the other shops can't tune the Haltech but if they are recomending other EMS first because of there confidence or experience then the rule of thumb is use the EMS the shop is confident in tuning. If you don't get a good tune all the good money spent on the eng. is at a much higher level of risk.

If you guys have so many in Quebec I sure havn't heard of them yet but good stuff. Show us the cars and the results on a fully built VQ Eng where they have been able to take it to the track and use the pwr. besides a DD.

man everything looks good but when a buddy of mine was getting his car tuned for turbo here in Houston, TX by one of the best here the tuner recommended Pauter Rods and showed us the bigger oil journals than the Eagle which keeps them cooler so they won't break. He also mentioned they are a little beefier. Check into them if you want some reliability. GL

As far as roll cage goes- Contact BamBam. He had his custom made by a racing company in Georgia (I believe)

Thanks guys.

I love Bambams build and followed some his posts on the run down the salt flats. Seeing the cages in some of the cars at Sashas shop that were done locally I think if there is a way to make a roll bar in the ZR these guys could do it. I will check into it for sure as its been on my mind since I went FI. I do want to be safe on track days but love my ZR and dont want to compromise the look or functionality etc.....

As far as the Pauter rods go sure bigger is better I guess but reading many posts here the Eagles should be more than adaquate for the whp I will put down and they are lighter. Thanks for the thought though.

I`ve been to Dallas texas a few times they really do do everything big there. LOL
