Default Fuel Gauge Reading "0"

Hey guys. We recently upgraded the fuel system prepping it for FI so now it's a return type system. However I noticed when I start the car and fuel is low, the gauge will read zero. Not ----- dashes, but 0. Before this was done, I've never seen 0, even when I ran my car straight out of gas. I'm thinking maybe the float is a bit damaged or somthing. No idea. It doesn't stay at 0 but I don't feel the reading is as accurate. Has this happened to you guys before?

Also, I'll have intermittent fuel smells now and then.

Any ideas?

I've noticed on start up, sometimes the fuel gauge will read empty, but then it will come back after a minute or two to the actual level. Sometimes it doesn't read quite full either when I know it is full. I have the CJM fuel system.

Did you pull the fuel pump to install any components? Could also have an issue with the wiring harness that goes in the tank. Check all the connectors and wires that go into the FP assembly. Maybe there is a tear or short in that harness???

Haven't tried to actually fill up the tank as of yet but I'm almost sure I'll run into the same thing as you rcdash...

Niceguyyy, I'll get that checked out this weekend. I'm still curious about the intermittent fuel smell... It's weird because it's not constant, so there isn't a leak, but if there isn't a leak, where is the smell coming from?!!!

The fuel smell could be coming from the gasket leaking on the hatch the covers the fp assembly. Might have a small leak that evaporates before it actually drops on the ground. Double check all lines and connections from the fp assembly to fuel rails and in between.

Worst case on the fill guage... look up how many gallons actually fill the tank... let's say its 13 gals. Then make a note where the needle is sitting on the guage, go fill it to the top. Now you know you have 13 gals of fuel... see where the needle sits. Then set your mileage counter to zero and you know you'll get atleast 210 miles to a tank... probably more, but then you can watch the guage to see how close it is.

The odor probably is coming from a messed up o-ring on top of the bucket. You should replace that too.

We now use teflon lined fuel lines.... No fuel smell at all.

The o-ring is fine because if it were messed up, there'd be a leak, and fuel leaks are constant. This fume was inconsistant. Like you saw on my other post, turns out some fuel came in contact w/ the evap lines and eventually it got purged out on it's own. Fixed itself practically.
