I recently changed my transmission and differential oil to Eneos snythetic. I got it from a local tune shop. Apparently it's No. 1 in Japan, but only recently became available in the U.S.

Eneos is Nippon Oil, so yes it's #1 in Japan, not because it is the highest quality but because it's in every service station (think back to Initial D). Also why import oil when you have your own reserves. Castrol/ Mobil1/ Valvoline/ Penzoil would cost a fortune over there because the only refineries there are Japanese companies, so they'd have to ship it all over.
Eneos is good oil, I've sold tons of it to various customers since they started selling it here when I worked for another shop. I wouldn't say it is exceptional, it's just a good consumer grade oil. But remember the opposite is true, it's more expensive here because they make it in Japan and have to ship it here. They don't process it here in the States.

Thanks for the background on Eneos oil. The tune shop made it sound like it was the best synthetic gear oil for Japanese cars. I was originally planning on using Amsoil.

You probably will never have an issue with the Eneos, just consider the price associated with it next time you do a gear oil change. For what you probably paid you could step into a redline, torco, motul, etc

I don't know about the gear and diff oils, but their engine oils have not fared very well from the Used Oil Analysis's that have been done.
Eneos was the only oil that ever burned off in my Z. I had to replace 1.5 quarts in less than 3K miles and the UOA were horrible. (check out the oil sticky).
