Noisy Transmission after JWT Clutch install
Hi everyone, I tried doing a search for my issue and I am either doing the search incorrectly or there isn't much info out there.
I burned my clutch out on my 2005 350z GTR at about 55K miles. I noticed I would get the burnt clutch smell when I would commute on hills etc...
So at the suggestion of my shop ( Z Car Garage in San Jose CA ) I had a JWT clutch installed. First thing I noticed is that I killed the engine about five times before I got used to the clutch .
Second thing I noticed was a rattling noise that was quite loud when the gears were not engaged and the car was at idle. It is really loud, enough to drown out the exhaust at idle.
It makes similar noises at low RPMs but generally is not noticable at higher RPMs or when the clutch is engaged.
When I spoke to my shop about it, they said that some transmissions are noisy and that the JWT clutch doesn't have a dampener like the factory clutch does.
The clutch performs well and I even squeezed a little more MPG over the slipping factory clutch.
My questions is:
- Is this normal
- Is it something that can be fixed
- Any ideas on how to make it better, especially if I want to sell it down the road?
Thanks for any help.

-yes
-no
-you'd have to install a different flywheel
Your garage told you the truth. The stock flywheel has a dual-mass design to help it absorb the (naturally occurring) rattling sound our transmissions make.

Yeah, I got the complete package including the flywheel (was around 700 or something) I love the performance, just haven't heard other cars with similar issues.
I guess I need to go to more shows or something. If I am not really concerned about weight, is there a comparable flywheel that would dampen the noise but not impede performance?
