Default VQ35: 3.5 V6...whats so special about it?

No Im not disrespecting the Z, so dont jump on me. Besides CVTCS and the drive by wire system, what makes the 350 push out 287? I mean, its not an Inline-6, it doesnt have an iron block, its not a flat six, so what is it? Oh yeah and do we have a 60 degree or 90 degree engine? (V

It's just the progression of engine design over time, more power out of less gas. The original V8's put down I think less than a hundred HP. And now Honda has a two liter naturally aspirated four cylinder pushing out two forty, thas almost forty more horsepower per liter than the VQ35. But if you're looking for explicit technical details, I have no idea.

I assume you are being playful, with: "...its not an Inline-6, it doesn't have an iron block, its not a flat six, ... ", but here is a thread that details the comprehensive engineering that has gone into the engine.

In terms of sheer numbers, 287hp from 3.5 litres isn't that hard to get. But, in the context of emissions, fuel economy, driveability and durability, it takes resources that only an engine manufacturer can summon.

There are 3 whitepapers on the VQ that you can buy online and download from sae.org for $12/ea:

1- Development of a New-Generation Lightweight 3-Liter V6 Nissan Engine
2- Second Generation of High-Response V6 Engine Series (3.0 and 3.5 Liters)
3- Third Generation of High-Response and High-Output 3.5L V-6 Engine

Those papers give good background information as well as the goals Nissan was striving for when developing the VQ. It also explains some things that some of us question.

Very good reads and worth the money, IMO.

Michael.

It's a 60 degree V.

There are lots of motors out there "more impressive" power wise than the current gen of Z motor, but as said above, its the progression of technology...lightweight, better balancing internally, and being forced to coax HP out of a car that needs to meet stringent emissions laws.

the M3 engines seem to be doing fine, it was the first year e46 m3's which experienced it. In europe they're putting out 343hp

A balanced and blueprinted 3.5 VQ from Japan will put out 350HP.

The VQ is a good base for a supercharger or even twin turbos, once they get them working right.

IMO, the VQ35DE is definitely capable of producing more hp if gas mileage is no issue w/ Nissan.

Also, be aware that there are factory turbocharged flavors of the VQ motor. IIRC, the JDM Stagea wagon has a VQ25DET motor.

Michael.
