Default Oil catch can....?

So whats the verdict on the use of an oil catch can on an N/A car?

Would this purely be for looks and serve little to no purpose on N/A? I know that with FI you have much more oil blowby therefore this is crucial, but would it be at least somewhat functional on N/A?

Any input is appreciated.

I run one on my car because I was getting some blow bye........all of the universal ones (greddy, etc) are just too big in my mind. I made one of a air/oil separator for an air compressor. It works well and collects a fair amount of oil. I don't drive my car a lot, but when I do it is I am very hard on it.

on NA car it wouldn't have much of a blow by compared to FI car, but it will still have some functionality.

Ya i can be hard on mine, as well, which is why i ask and would imagine i would be getting some blowby, so this might come in handy.

Besides, i dont mind the bulk of the universals, and i can get a nice Cusco new for $68 shipped.

My car has relatively high mileage..........I can tell you for a fact that it catches a fair amount of oil that otherwise would have gone into the plenum.

It isn't so much the visual of the large size, but the constraints in space in our engine bays. The only place I could mount the smaller greddy was next to the air box or heatshield (with jwt). I made one for 30 bucks that works perfectly well and is about 1/3 the size.

Look at the operation of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Works well.

I remember removing the plenum, and determined to clean every square inch inside. After all dirt cannot be good. Or can it? A light coat of oil inside the plenum traps dust and debris going into the motor. And that is a good thing.

where do you guys mount yours? I heard if you put the catch can between the intake tube and the lower PCV on the driver side is the better way. But most people seems to be doing it the other way around, between the plenum and PCV on the passenger side.

It is now mounted w/o the zip ties.

It sits fairly low too.

I mounted one on my old Mazda MX6, now my winter car. I have found it to be more of a pain in the *** than anything, I'm just going to remove it when I bring the car out of storage. It has blow by and burns oil, it made a noticable difference in reducing the black/blue smoke coming out the back but meh. Did I notice a performance difference? Of course not.

Oh and whoever in the DIY said to use fuel hose as your lines in and out... you're an idiot. The was a nice bill of materials so I just ran out to my nearest home depot/crappy tire and rigged mine without much thought since I knew it worked for everyone else. Well a fuel line is meant to have positive pressure in it, not a vacuum... so of course it collapes reducing the CFM going through the line. So in conclusion, buy tubing with some sort of structure to it that prevents it from collapsing under vacuum.

If anybody wants one... i'll ship you mine for $20 + shipping lol.

Good point, i never really thought about any benefit a light coat of oil might have inside the Plenum. I know from when i installed my MD 5/16, i have a light coat of oil in there, but i didnt bother cleaning at that point.

Now that im getting into higher mileage, and still hard on the Z, I just thought it might be beneficial to get one to prevent any more of a buildup.

if you think a light coat of oil, not even a filter will 'clean' 3000cubic liters of air per minutes you're insane.
