Default Horse Power

I've seen several threads with people talking about spitting out HP in the range of 240+ on their Z... I don't get this... baseline the Z is advertised as producing 287 HP... why are some people lower?

The 287 HP is rated at the crank. All car companies advertise their hp at the crank instead of at the wheels which would make more sense to us buyers. Most Z's are pumping anywhere from 235 to 245 hp at the wheels. There is 10-15% lost through the drive train.

At the crank versus at the rear wheels.

Depending on where you live, this number varies depending on elevation and temperature. In AZ, most stock Z's are dynoing about 225+ hp to the wheels.

The advertised power rating is usually crank or flywheel horsepower. The amount of power that actually makes it to the wheels is the rear wheel hosepower (RWHP). The reason why the RWHP is less is because power is loss through the driveline and because power is used to power accessories such as fans, stereo, alternator, water pump, etc.
