Default Using diesel motor oil

I read a few threads on other sites about using diesel motor oil on their gasoline engine cars. From what I read, it has more zinc and phosphorus which helps protect the engine under high heat, and also has more detergents to keep it clean. Supposedly there is benifits to using it on gasoline engines, but not the other way around (using gasoline engine oil in a diesel engine). The only problem is it will damage you Cat converter over time.

I'm thinking about giving it a try since I like to drive my car hard and race on the weekends.. I'm not concerned about my cat. Does anyone know if this will harm my VQ in the long run? I'm currently looking at the Amsoil 5w30 Synthetic Diesel Motor oil.. It has the API tag on it and says it can be used on gasoline engines, but I will only use it if it's 100% safe.

Only one way to find out. You'd probably lose some MPG and it would give off a heavier smell.

HUH ?????? unless your engine has a major oil burning problem, you shouldn't smell a thing. and these oils smell just like other motor oils.

I think I will go ahead and get the Amsoil 5w30 synthetic diesel motor oil.

Yes, it might pollute a little more, and damage my cat, but that is why law required the zinc levels to go down in the first place. Zinc, which is what helps protect the engine from wear used to be required to be at 1600. After people found out how much it pollutes, The Zinc levels were required to go down to 800, thats half the protection!

For those of you do not want to use Diesel motor oil, look into the "European Formula" motor oils such as Mobil 0w40 and Amsoil 0w40.. They have more zinc in them (1000-1200 I beleive) and can get away with it because of the "European Formula" on their bottles.

read on "bob the oil guy" site that the smell runs heavier....possibly from burning problem or not I don;t know because it didn't say.

, I have seen this oil and its predecessor run in many gasoline powered and NA/Turbo engines. UOA's have always come back with great results .

My UOA for Mobile1 turbo truck diesel hasn't been beaten yet. I'm trying a few others but will probably go back to it.
