I just got the JWT clutch/fly combo delivered, and I have no intentions of flaming a company in any way what so ever because the problem most likely occured in transit via fed ex, but there is a little scuff to the back side of the flywheel, and I am extremely ill informed on such matters, will there be any issues/premature wear do to this and should i send it back to get replaced?

Um, call the vendor and ask them? If they say yes, then do it. If they say no, pursue this thread. JWT is a pretty upstanding company - did you buy it directly from them?

 

looks like the back of the flywheel so no wear and tear on that, and it doesn't look like a big enough damage to mess with the balance, more of an aesthetic thing

 

What's the purpose of the notches on the outside of that ring? Will having one of them deformed make a difference?

 

you might get screwed if you signed the waybill stating youve received it in good order. you should check the package to see if its damaged before signing it.
if there was no visible damage to the box, then you can go after the vendor for not packaging the product correctly. either way, yuo might be able to get a credit to have that machined locally

 

The notches are there to trigger the crankshaft sensor. The sensor has to "see" those notches in order to signal the ECU.

 

I was suspecting something like that.

I vote to send it back. Why would you take a chance on it not working properly when you'd have to remove the transmission to replace it later?

 

+1, I especially don't like the deformed crank position sensor notch.

 

The teeth on the outside of the flywheel are the starter ring gear. Section EC of the service manual says the position sensor uses a signal plate.

To generate the pulse pattern shown in the manual, the signal plate will have twenty seven notches arranged in three groups of nine each. The outer edge will be smooth between the groups, and there will be enough space for three more notches in the smooth part. The starter ring gear has too many teeth to generate the signal pattern shown.

Can you post a picture of the entire flywheel showing all the notches? Or just count them and describe the pattern?

You may be able to get them to send you a new signal plate to replace the damaged one. I'd suspect the screws that secure it are installed with Loctite, so you might want to see if you can get them all loose before you agree to do the swap yourself. They'll be able to tell you.

 

Although it SHOULD be fine, I would still ask for a replacement. You wouldn't want to have to remove the trans a second time if it ends up messing with the crank pos sensor.
