Hey guys, i have been searching for this all morning.
Does anyone have info on a VQ35DE - 35HR swap or even a VQ37HR swap?
Is it possible? Is it a big pain in the ***?
Would it be better just to get a DE rev up?
I am just curious as my engine is going to blow up sooner or later, would like to upgrade it!

Swaps in this, or any other car, are limited by your budget and your skill level - if you want a Z with an engine other than what your car came with, where everything works as it should, your best bet is to sell your car and buy the one that has the engine you want as standard.

the only way I would be doing it is IF the engine blows up as it pushing 120K when it does blow up, I will be replacing it. at that point I am already dedicated to a new engine, was just curious how much more it would be just to go ahead and get a de rev up or hr instead...
otherwise I am perfectly happy with, and will drive it till it blows.

this has been discussed quite a bit, search around. like said above, anything is possible with enough cash and/or skill. "pain in the ***" is relative; the cash you can spend or your level of skill will determine whether it is a "pain in the ***" or not. it might be a pain in the *** for some but not for someone like yourself, and vice versa. you should read up on what you find searching and then decide for yourself. i doubt u'll get much response here though since there are quite a few threads on this already.

Nissan Sport magazine has had two project car articles written about swapping a VQ35HR into an '06 350Z racecar.
We've had some extensive discussions going on about these type of Nissan engine swaps and the challenges you can expect to meet. Here's a link to our discussion board with more detailed info:

Here's one - I belong to an FX35 forum and the 1st gen is the VQ35DE. One NY member is doing an HR swap with a custom TT and it's complicated. Biggest challenge is the wiring harness - the HR and DE are different enough to make and aftermarket ECU both a necessity and a headache.

Yep- turbocad is another participant on the Nissan Sport boards and quite prolific in his fabrication. But let's be straight on this: the mechanical swap can be done, but that's not the hard part. The hard part is integrating the main and ancillary harnesses into the new ECM. If any part of the system does not function (or even read out a voltage higher or lower than specified), it can put the car out of action. As cars and powertrains have become ever more sophisticated, so too have the electronic controls needed to run them.

Even if you find someone who "specializes" in Nissan engine swaps, you'd be spending a LOT in parts and labor to accomplish this. It would be better and more cost effective to sell your car and purchase a newer Z with the VQ35HR or VQ37VHR.
This might run into the same budget and skill set as to putting an LS swap.
search it up, your gonna find its probably more cost effective to by a Z33 chassis that comes with an HR motor
