You might want to do some reading on this as there are lots of threads and opinions on the subject.

That being said, all new Zs come with synthetic in trans and diff. You can switch to it, it will help gas mileage for sure. No guarantee on making it quiet or shift smoother. For some people it does, for others it makes it worse. Most popular brands are Redline & Royal Purple.

would getting more oem oil be just fine if your not racing? Or is it better if i upgrade to some better oil because over all it makes a bigger differance?

Synthetics are slipperier (sp?) than conventional oils so they are perfect for gear to gear meshing that occurs in the trans and diff. It really has nothign to do with racing or performance.

i switched to Redline fluids and haven't noticed much of a difference but did not get to the track this summer to really try it but you will be fine staying with OEM.

The only "required" OEM fluid is for auto trans - using anthing else voids the warranty.

If by "OEM oils" you mean the new OEM synthetic, then by all means you can use that as well as an aftermarket synthetic gear lube.

if you're NA and not racing then you're just fine with OEM, though something like Redline MT90 is a better oil in some ways, it's better in ways that you probably won't need (i.e. film strength, shear resistence, etc. properties that you won't overwhelm in the stock fluid, so no real necessity to upgrade the fluid.) I don't know the price of the OEM oil though, so if it's close to or exceeds the price of redline, I'd do the redline.

if you are going to be making north of something like 350ft-lb of torque OR racing the car (or both), then I'd be putting a more robust oil in there.

Thank you Neal, that what i was looking for on the answer. My friend with the rx-8 just did the redline and he said he was impressed but worth the extra cost.

The synthetic lubricant debate will go on forever. But I recommend synthetic for operating at temperature extremes. Tucson, AZ for example where summer temperatures are 100 degrees plus.

At the other end is Fargo, ND. If I am driving a vehicle, any vehicle, in sub-freezing temperatures you can bet I am going with synthetic everything.

Loud shift between 1 and 2 , sounds like your jamming the gears and destroying your syncros. Learn to shift, very simple. Also changing the fluid to some nice Amsoil (very popular) smooths out the shifting slightly. They offer a nice GL4 fluid, i've been running it in mine for 85k miles now.

I love Royal Purple, it meets both GL4 & GL5, so this works for both the tranny & rear end in a single product. Unfortunately the price is now $19.00 a quart (3 1/8 for the tranny & 3 pints for the rear end) pricey, but worth it IMO.

This is so not true, the J-Matic for the auto trans is a spec not a fluid, Amsoil, Redline and Mobil 1 all make a J-Matic meet or exceed fluid. Moss/ Magnasion act, ever here of it?

Royal Purple is GL5 and will eat the hell out of the synchros. It's fine for the differential but DO NOT put RP in the transmission. I made this mistake and noticed my transmission did not want to go into gear. I changed that crap out in a week.
