Default oil consumption...yeah again

hey guys,

do we know what actually causes the oil consumption issues that plague these cars? i found the TSB thread but i doubt i'd ever get nissan to spot me a new motor as mine's an '03 with 106k miles

my issues didnt start till around 60k and i've been consistantly burning about a quart every thousand or so miles

106,000 miles maybe the motor is just tired. You already know you should have a compression test done.

Unless it's leaking out, it has to be going past the rings and/or valve stem seals.

See post #15 here: https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-...iscussion.html

"They think oil is being pulled down the valve guides by high vacuum b/c the variable valve timing is leaving the intake open too long."

I can't attest to the accuracy of the info, so judge for yourself.

...umm lets see. Oil someplace where it should not be. Like in the combustion chamber.

Any car will eventually start burning oil. That is just a fact of life. After 106K, I can't imagine complaining to Nissan about the problem. A quart of oil every thousand miles after 106K is not unreasonable. Just add a quart every thousand miles and don't worry about it.

dont feel bad i have an 03 with about 48k on it and it uses oil just about as bad as yours, fortunately i bought an oil pan with increased capacity. winchman is probably right about the consumption coming from the valve stem seals since i have performed compression tests on my engine several times and have had good even compression from all 6 cylinders. personally the only other thing that i can think of would be crankcase ventilation. if you have ever had the upper plenum off of the intake, and removed the cover that is in the middle of intake you will see that each intake runner has its own port where crankcase gasses (or in our case oil) is going into the intake. i have tried a catchcan in line with the crankcase ventilation hose and have been able to figure out where some of the oil is going. i ordered some viton valve stem seals from z1 but havent been able to get enough time to put them in yet. plus i have been debating some other mods while i have it torn apart. either way i feel your pain man.
