Why do I have the worst of luck!!!! The techs started up the car this morning and it started making a noise!!!! I asked if it was valvetrain noise but he said he wasn't sure so it's being thoroughly inspected. Crossing my fingers I hope there is nothing wrong.

I'm sure your mechanic knows this, but usually engines after major overhaul make loud noises until the oil go up to the valvetrain and lubricate everything.

Also, its normal for built VQ's (and sometimes stock ones) to make loud valvetrain noises.

Don't like the red stuff (looks like some odd lube) but if you look closely, you'll see one valve is opening while the other is not. This leads me to believe the valves aren't shimmed correctly (too tight) and possibly others are too loose. The loose ones just make noise while the tight ones can burn up a valve and hurt an engine.

Bingo! I'm not sure what kind of PTV clearance the HR has but that could make it end poorly. It would certainly cause a tapping sound.

The only thing I find curious is this noise was discovered after a day of tuning. I would initially think it would be noticed right away. I'm not real familar with the top end on the VQ but could this be a sticky HLA?

Nah... it should have made the noises immediately. I can only imagine they may have thought it was a basic valvetrain noise or maybe thought it would go away after the oil worked it way through the system. Another possibility could deal with the variable vavle timing getting stuck. Can't say for sure.

Well find out very soon (tomorrow). The techs said that maybe a spring failed and the reason for the sound was that the Cam lobe was not riding on what ever it's supposed to be riding on it was slapping it.

Well guys the bad news... I mean, the horrible news is that they found Metal shavings in the oil filter. What they said that failed was the dual valve spring so that valve effed up my head so i don't wanna risk it any more with that block and those heads, so I went ahead and bought a brand new Motor from Courtesy Parts ($7200) so right off the bat this project is a fail my 10-15k spend on this project. But I'm still going to install the camshafts by themselves with no aftermarket Valve-train, Blue350Zed has similar cams with stock valve-train and had an awesome N/A Z with good Power.

The spring failed after a few hours of use, and a dual spring to boot?!?!?!?!? WTF! I'd be raising a little hell with the manufacturer.

Sorry to hear man, worst part about it... the HR's valvetrain was probably strong enough stock. Could have been a defective spring, but its also possible it was installed incorrectly or over-rev'ed. Any-how, I think your new plan is fine and should yield great results (just make sure the stock springs are compatible with the lift).

How can I find out if my stock valve spring can handle 11.0mm of lift? They say that stock valve springs can handle even up to 12mm lift cams but I might be wrong.

Tough to say, Jim Wolf cams suggests changing them out for their 11.9 cam (stock is 10.54). Where-as, Tomei suggests the DE and HR is expected to be ok upto about 11. Tough one... I'd look for peolpe like Blue350Zed and see what they have been able to get away with as well as talking to some of the manufacters' tech depts.
