Critical Missed step in oil change
I am reading the newspaper today and come across this article in the automotive secton of this guy telling a newspaper on a critical step being missed in oil changes:
This guy writes: "I do most of my light maint. work and I've added a step in my oil changes that I think is beneficial in the long run. Here's what I do, I drain the warm, dirty oil, then I add this step, with the plug still out, I start the engine and let it idle for about a minute. I usually manage to get another quart or so out of the engine.
My question is, I change the oil every 5,000 miles, am I doing more harm than good on my vehicle? I figure the more dirty oil I get out the better."
The write writes, back and basically says its a terrible idea.
I about died when I read this article, thought I would share so you folks would get a laugh out of this.
When I fist got my license at 15, I changed the oil the first time, and I forgot to put the drain plug in, I had to go buy 5 more quarts, LOL! Luckily I didn't start the car. My dad pointed it out to me.

Interesting. I did the same thing on my first oil change many years ago. For the last few years I've gotten lazy and use a local quick change place. But every time I do I always check to make sure they have replaced the plug properly before I drive off - always remembering those 4 quarts I splattered all over the parking lot.

Here's one, not sure how funny, but on my last car (Ford Contour) I was doing the late afternoon oil change (by late afternoon I mean a few beers already). Everything is going good but when I put the new filter on, it seem to feel different when snugging it down, seemed like I had to turn it more to get it tight. Anyway, I put in the 5.6 qts oil and start her up and I hear a splashing sound coming from underneath. I quiclky turn the car off and sure enough there's a puddle of oil and the engine bay is covered in oil. Come to find out that the reason the filter felt different is that the gasket from the old filter had stuck to the engine block. So I had a gasket to gasket seal that, well, didn't seal. After this I decided that the late afternoon oil changes weren't the best idea.

haha ive had the exact same thing happen to me when i was changing to oil on my moms car!
I did that with my first self oil change back in my teen years... I guess the gasket made its way off of the filter and I ended up splitting it when tightening it to the engine. Turned on the car and "splat" oil all over the driveway and the oil light on... scared sh*tless...

What a TERRIBLE idea. Not only does this yahoo run his engine dry every oil change (which would be bad enough), but that extra oil coming out probably means he ran his oil pump dry.
That means after the oil change is done he runs it dry AGAIN, while the oil pump tries to self-prime.

In highschool I was working on my Camaro replacing the rear brakes. (1978 camaro). I jacked up the rear end and put the back up on jack stands. Then I removed the two rear wheels.
I thought it look really cool like this and I decided that it would be really fun to get in, start it, put it in gear, and run the rear drums at high speed. (ok, so we were pretty bored).
Well, as you might expect BOTH rear drums came off at speed, rolled across my yard, in to the neighboor's PERFECTLY TENDED garden and wiped out 2 of his huge tomato plants. D'Oh!
So, not only did I immediately know how dumb I was. I had to tell the neighboor how dumb I was and fess up about the plants. He was really nice about it, he even managed not to laug. (at least not while I was standing there). I think he was just glad I decided to fess up.
That means after the oil change is done he runs it dry AGAIN, while the oil pump tries to self-prime.

Now that is a funny image, seeing two brake drums hauling *** towards your neighbors garden.
uh... i have to say that the drums was probably more dumbererest. hehe.... we all make mistakes... =\
one time i was over at a friends while he was about to change oil.... so he jacks the car.... opens the filler cap... puts on some gloves... reaches for the filter.... I interrupt him at this point and say, "hey... you gonna pull the filter off now?"
"uh... yeah" (like duh?)
After a brief exchange he realized why I asked.

Friend of mine took his car to a "quick change place" (Quick 10 i think?) New filter? check...Plug back in? Check. Pay the man? Check. So he drives off....engine locked up a mile or so down the road. The guys at the oil place forgot to put oil back in the car after draining it all. Dry dry dry, I tell ya. So guess who got a new engine courtesy of "ye 'ol lube shop"?

My friend worked at a Pep Boys a few years back. He forgot to tighten a guy's wheel back on after doing brakes (or whatever). The guy drove off & a few blocks away, the wheel fell off, hahaha.
After my buddy did the same thing a second time, they fired him, ah well.
