Is there a code or marking on the pumpkin that will confirm that it is a VLSD or Locking unit and not a Open unit? I have an opportunity to buy a good looking pumpkin from a 6spd car but the yard is not sure if it came out of a base Z or not. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I thin my open diff ('08 base 6MT) had a yellow paint "GC" marking on top, while the VLSD pumpkin I bought had a "GD" mark.

just rotate one axle shaft while you hold the pinion shaft. If it turns the opposite direction - open; if it fights to turn - VLSD.

True - but, you also want to be sure of the gear ratio before you buy. That's where the letter code is helpful, assuming someone hasn't swapped out the original ring and pinion.

Havn't found a VLSD that will do that yet, and i get to play with a lot of different Z's.

My OS diff will do that, but its expected.

Based on this information, I had a guy drop off what i thought was a VLSD pumpkin because it was marked "GD". Holding the pinon and spinning one axle stub causes the other one to spin in the opposite direction. Can you verify the markings.

pop the cover off and look, or just pop the pass side stub shaft and post a pic of it.

Will do. My mechanic buddy told me that this can still happen sometimes with some LSDs. When I get back into town I'll pop it off. Thanks man
