Default STI & EVO Final Drive Numbers V. 350Z

I was reading the stats on the Subaru STI & EVO III Final Drive numbers. I thought it was interesting:

STI final drive = 3.9
EVO final drive = 4.5
350 final drive = 3.5

I was wondering why these cars had similar horse power to the 350Z and yet had faster 0-60 times. I am thinking it is in part due to the lower gearing. It would seem as if the AWD allows for the lower gearing. I hope the 3.9 final drive works out for the Z (faster acceleration yet "streetable").

Hey! Your in valencia! Rite near ME! PM me lets go for a cruise...

the STI final drive probably brings the gear ratio's down to what the stock Z's are...

dont know specs on that...

Another Valencia citizen! I am surprised I have not seen your car around here (since it stands out). I would like to ride in your Z each time you do a mod so I can see how they perform!

An AWD full throttle launch is a lot more helpful to 0-60 than the difference in gearing. The EVO (don't know about STI) is also underrated from the factory. They are around 285 as opposed to the claimed 271.

also the tranny gearing in the STI is really really close. You have 2 shifts to do to get to 60 and use 5 gears for the 1/4 mile. It's sad, but both cars smoke us in just about every way but looks.

Actually... the STi is geared too low for an optimal 0-60 time because 2nd only goes to 57 mph. That's why you'll normally see the Evo have a faster 0-60 (and sometimes 1/4) because the STi uses 3 gears in the 0-60, and 5 in the 1/4.

ok guys, set up your date by PM please.

the Z also needs third to hit 60 doesn't it? this is also an illusion to our 0-60. TS flash would remedy that...but alas, more to life than 0-60... there is also 60-170.

With a good driver this gearing would be an advantage in both the 1/4 and 0-60. Why, because you would be keeping the rpms up in the "power band" of the engine. I would have to agree with the original post that the different final drive for the Z will make a big impact on 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, but you have to know how to drive the car first. Shifting and launch are where most races are won and lost and the final drive will make both more challenging since you will be shifting more and launching rpms may need to be changed to keep traction.

5 shifts take a long time. I would take a larger motor with a wider powerband over shifting 5 times in the quater.

Exactly, the Z actually needs LESS gearing and more power.

Exactly...ala Viper. the AWD cars need the higher gearing in order to overcome the inherent additional friction of their drivetrains.

Interestingly enough though, I have found 3 final drives listed for the Z according to Nissan....3.538 (for R200 MT), and 3.357 (for R200V MT and R200V AT). I wonder what this R200V rear end is?

Damn dude, thats probably right. The 3.35 is only in the auto and the 3.53 is only in the manual. I want to swap rear ends with someone with an auto so they can accelerate faster and I can accelerate slower. Any takers in Texas? Oh, no base models, please.

If V is for viscous (sounds logical to me!), then some of the 240 SX's used these as well as several otehr Nissans. The 240's had 4.10 final drive ring and pinions IIRC...hmmm...might be interesting to see if we can make those work

Here is the link where I saw the info regarding the ratios:

http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...axles.htm#350Z

I think a higher final drive is a GREAT mod for this car, but the one option that is pending is too expensive for my tastes).

So that website is saying that only the base model has a 3.53 and all the others are 3.35. This is not what Nissan advertises. What is true?

What Nissan advertises is correct. There are only differances between the 2 transmissions, not the trim levels.
