torque aside, isn't that considered lugging the engine? 6th gear at 33mph...that's definitely lugging the engine which isn't good at all.

Yup, agreed, however, lugging an engine causes poor fuel economy, and, tbh, it doesn't feel like it's lugging either, at least cruising.

What i've found is the MPG has gone up considerably, kind of suggesting it's not out of the engines range.

you should never drive under 1500 rpm period...

Not according to Nissan for this car specifically. But i know what you're talking about, the ECU moves to a set table of fuel mappings at that point and below.

I shift up around 2.5k - 3k, downshift when I need to and cruise 45mph+ in 6th. Getting 22.5 mpg. no complaints here.

Yup, all depends on the driving conditions. I've noticed i don't get increases out of the norm when i'm driving faster/cruising/highway etc/ but around town, where i'd generally lose it, i'm now gaining and/or holding the highway gains i've previously gotten.
