Default Question about engine in a 350z i bought

Hey whats up guys. I bought a 04 350z the other day and the engine was replaced but the guy kept saying it was out of a g35. I know its the same engine but I know the G35 had some models that had a lower HP engine. I have been looking online to see if I can find any info on telling the different engines apart but can't seem to find anything.

So my question is, is there any way to know what version engine exactly my car has? Is there some numbers I can look up or some sort of parts I can look for that will tell me.

Also I the engine sounds really loud, almost like muffled exhaust pulses. I use to have a 350z a few years ago and don't remember the engine being so loud in the cabin. It has a K&N intake on it and thats pretty much it. The transmission is making noise but I know thats pretty normal.

Thanks for the help.

It sounds like someone made an impulse buy. Did the owner have any paperwork of the engine swap? Did he specify the reason for the engine swap in the first place? Did you have a mechanic thoroughly inspect that thing from top to bottom, front to back?

Yeah. OP sure has alot of questions for the forum that should have been directed to the original seller in the first place.

OP, was the engine swap performed at a dealer under warranty or did the seller do it at their own expense?

OP, does the car have the factory or an aftermarket exhaust? Do you know if test pipes were installed on this vehicle? That could be a contributing factor for all of the drone noise your experiencing within the cabin.

I got a good deal on it. It's the second Z I owned. It had its little problems but nothing major and I am a pretty good mechanic. I have been taking care of all the little things but the engine thing is in the back of my head.

The car was bought off some guy that had a mechanic do the swap. It has stock exhaust engine all the way back. The engine is running fine after I gave it a tune up and it feels like it has good power and all. Other than the transmission making a racket like they all do in these years everything else is good.

My question was because of the list of different engine combinations that I saw on 350z wiki that can come in a G. I wanted to know if the detuned versions had different computer tunes or if they had different parts in the engine like plenums or injectors or what.

The drone is only when I have the windows up and I'm just wondering of the car really sounds like that normally cause I can't remember what my other one sounded like.

If anyone is a Miami local and wants to meet up so I could hear their car that would be a big help. I just want something to compare it to.

Thanks.

The 'lower power' VQ was all in the tune/ECU not the engine itself. As long as you've got the original ECU you will be making stock power. In fact I don't think its possible to swap in the old 1st gen G35 ECU and wiring harness...wouldn't be compatible at all with your 350z CAN bus and BCM.

you couldnt even swap a rev-up for a non-revup without a new harness either. Whats in the car, is whats supposed to be there.

Man this transmission sounded like a cement mixer rolling a bunch of rocks inside. I checked the fluid and it looks like they put the wrong fluid in there so I bought some royal purple and put it in and it stopped with all the noise.

It still clunks into 1st 2nd and 3rd and every now and then it will grind 6th. It whines in the gears and it chatters when it goes too low in the rpms and the throw out bearing is making noise. Typical stuff I read about so not too concerned. I'm going to buy a CD009 and have it ready for when this one kills itself.

I think a better way to describe what I am hearing is that it sounds kind of like a Subaru when I accelerate. It's got that really separated pulse sound and not smooth. I'm thinking it's the intake. But like I said I have nothing to compare it to so just curious.
