Default Oil Cooler Relief Valve Help

I noticed my car was leaking oil fairly bad last week, so upon further research I opted to change the gasket labeled number "4" in the picture above.

The problem is that I loosened the connector bolt, pulled off the oil cooler ring and can not for the life of me find or confirm that the relief valve (number 5) was there. I don't think it fell when I pulled off the cooling ring, but I could be wrong.

How far in is the relief valve supposed to be? Should I be able to see it from the outside?

I'm assuming that you can't run without it, right?

Any help greatly appreciated, the car is getting shipped off to my new place on Friday so it REALLY needs to be back together by then.

Thanks so much.

that relief valve is pressed in, It will not just fall out. the is just a ball and spring. i have seen the seat cracked before. you should just be able to see part of the housing/seat and the ball.
