Default Automatic Transmission Replacement / Interchangeability

I have an 03 Nissan 350z with an Automatic Transmission. Radiator cracked and coolant mixed with transmission fluid (what a shitty design flaw) so now I'm looking at a new transmission.

My question is, can I go with any 03-07 AT, or am I stuck with an 03? The mechanic that is going to install it said 03-07 are all interchangeable, but local Nissan dealer said they only install same year and I called about an 04 and they said they wouldn't give me a warranty on it because I have an 03.

Are there really that many changes to the transmission in a year? Should I stick with an 03?

Listen to the dealer. While I don't own an a/t, Nissan has tried to maximize component use for each model year Z. If your ECM doesn't recognize your particular tranny due to wiring or electronic differences, there will be problems.

In my case, I learned my lesson after swapping an '07 HR engine into a '06 race Z. The mechanical swap went well, but still presented major issues due to differences in the main harness and inputs the ECM was looking for.

Not sure about '07 but I would say older than that would work fine. But for peace of mind, stick to '03.

I had the same problem before. I re-built my transmission and then I added an AT oil cooler as a precaution.

Thanks guys. I'll stick with the '03 Transmission and will likely install an oil cooler as well. I don't want to have to blow $1000+ again for a $150 part's malfunction.
