How common is it to crack the heads if you over heat

That is not at all common. You would have to severely overheat the VQ and bypass all the safety features (ie. limp mode) to overheat and severely warp aluminum heads.

I've warped my passenger side cylinder head. My temp all of a sudden spiked to redline while I was in the middle of a time attack challenge and I think this was the main cause
