Default Boosted engine dipstick popping out

I have a Vortech V2 on a 2003 Z (JDM DE motor recently installed with about 3000 miles). The dipstick is popping out from the crank case pressure. In searching, I see recommendations to install an oil catch can that is vented to the atmosphere. Anyone have had a problem like this and know if the catch can is the solution?

That is not a proper fix IMO. If crankcase pressure is too high, it's best to fix the problem.
how is your PCV system setup?

PCV is stock. Found this excellent tutorial on the problem https://www.350z-uk.com/topic/82588-...omment-1244631

I’m going to first disconnect the PCV return to the plenum and let it vent to the atmosphere. I’ll cap off the plenum tube. This will stop the boost pressure from pushing past the PCV valve and pressurizing the crank case. If this works, then I’ll get a catch can for the PCV hose.

It might, but it doesn't make it right. Your car tho, you want the blower to be aspirating air out of the crankcase.

Do you have the retainer piece for the dip stick that mounts to the block and holds it in place?

After allot of on-line research that gives a number of disagreeing views, we settled on opening the driver’s side vent to atmosphere (it was already that way from whoever installed the SC), capping the port to the intake, capping the port to the PCV, drilling out the PCV and venting the PCV to a catch can. This seems to be working. Car runs so much better and boost comes in way earlier than before. The dipstick is staying put. Thanks all for your thoughts. We are heading to the track on Saturday for a shake down.

I do not have a retainer. I will have to look into that.

been there, giant plume of smoke behind me scared me to death lol.
Also, CZP makes a nice pvc outlet (on the valve cover) to 10AN adpater for this instance.. much better flow vs a drilled out factory pcv valve. Very cheap iirc.

a bump to this thread, big boost power usually means a larger gap in the rings, lose fit etc, so when you drive the car without it being VERY hot, you will get wild blow by, its not a problem, its just part of the hassle of a big turbo etc on the engine. You will always have blowby and crank case issues, so yes, venting them is a must.. you will likely need to adjust your tune and idle for the vented ditch to the pcv system.

I've seen a comparison on VTA vs closed loop system on a 40psi Evo. You very much can have a system that's NOT vented, even HPA talks about the benefits of a closed loop system. Keeping the block under vacuum is infinitely better than just letting it vent.

id assume were talking about more of an oil air Seperator deal, catch can that pulls back to vacuum in the manifold.. yes thats certainly better than vta, my point was more that hes gna deal w blow by regardless, but def a few ways to skin that cat tho..

Yes, absolutely. The VQ has very small ports so this is an issue. On cars with metal valve covers you can just easily weld some ports. They sell the fancy CNC valve covers that have 2 ports per cover, but people may not want to spend the money.
