Default scortching SS

Can you Scortch Stainless steel or can you only scortch titanium? i'm wanting to scortch my tips on my stillen exhaust ... also if it can be done .. how do you go about doing it?

If you get steel hot enough, it will turn blue. However, it is usually a really dark color and can weaken the steel a lot. I've never seen any other colors and when I say hot, I mean really hot! I've only ever done it by accident on axe or chisel blades when sharpening them. The problem with an exhaust is there is a lot of metal for the heat to conduct very rapidly into.

I am pretty sure teh process is called annealing. Many metals turn colors with heat. In fact, titanium will turn all sorts of color depending on the temperature applied. Many artists use this process in metal sculpture. However, UsafaRice is correct. Steel must be heated to an insanely high temp to anneal to a different color.
