Default question about Gear ratios?

Excuse me for my lack of terminalogy if i can get 35 to 40mph in 1st. Then 2nd can only get me to barely 60mph. Then 3rd to around 90 or more........ What can i do to get better results from my second Gear Without Taking away from my 1st and 3rd Gears.

Any info would help.

And an explanation as to why would be a bonus.

Thanks in advance.

well without changing the 2nd gear ratio in the tranny you can increase the length of all your gears by increasing the rev limit. or you can increase/decrease the length of all the gears through your final drive ratio in the diff.

Well technically if you reduced the gear ratio of the second gear by like .25 that would probably get you in the 65-70mph range. The reason I said technically is because it would not be cheap or easy. It's one thing to change the final drive ratio, which is like a 1000, but to change gear ratios...well that would probably be like 1000 for a custom-ground gear, and about 1000 for labor...maybe more. It would be cheaper if you got a Technosquare reflash which would raise your rpm-limit to 7100 or something...that should give you a couple of extra mph in each gear.

so for the final drive it would cost 1000 and how much for install?

is there a certain company that has already made this part?

do you agree the second gear is the weakest link out of all the gears?

thanks for your answer i know i could buy the ecu upgrade but that really doesnt solve the performance issue in second it just kind of covers it up. I would still be getting less out of second then any other gear.

Not at all. The close ratios allow you to stay in the power band at all times in a race situation.

2nd is pretty much as it should be. Having a higher rev limiter would be better though.

well getting an ECU which would raise the redline in all gears is not all that much different than changing the final gear, which would increase top speed in all gears. The only way to increase the top speed in 2nd without changing anything else is to alter the actual tranny gear...which is not all that much worth it. If you are planning on dragging the car and are not happy with the gearing because the ratios are too close, what you might wanna do is buy a rear end with a different ratio and get an ecu to raise the rev limit...altering the tranny is really expensive....

2nd gear appears to be the weakest bc it gets abused the most out of all the gears. every stoplight race you slam it in 2nd. it always get downshifted into, etc. its not weaker just used more.

350EVO 3.9 final drive should be arriving July 21st. The ring gear had to be remade with the proper bolt pattern.

350evo has a rear end gear swap. Except that it is a 3.917 or something and stock is like 3.5xx. Which means that rather than increasing top speed in each gear it will decrease top speed in each gear. This will increase acceleration overall, but may not necessarily increase quarter-mile times because you may now be obligated to add an extra gear shift which would take time away...its all about trade-offs...

How 'bout a lower final drive availability? Say, 3.0 or 2.8, in that range. I'm doing FI and would like to lengthen the gears to match power band better.
