Hey, don't start driving up the price of our maxima engine parts. They're nice and cheap now.

I have a line on a set of heads off a Maxima but I need clarification on the variable timing issue......I think that was what was brought up before....but with the VQ30 heads.

I confirmed they are the same with my Nissan parts guru aka Dave Burnette at South Point Nissan.

He said the list above is correct, except 10/03+ production 2004.5 350Z, 11/02+ Altima, and 8/04+ Murano go to a new head part number.

ANY 2002-2003 Maxima head will work, however I'd double check to make sure with the VIN# incase there is a parts list mistake(happens). The "new" heads could just be a minor non-functional change, so they could still work.

The only difference is the head gaske tI thought. The maxima one is only 2 layer instead of the 350z 3 layer one.

I don't know about this particular application but as Ice suggested it could be for a minor non-functional difference.

A Nissan example was a buddy of mine had an engine failure on his 1990 Infiniti Q45 (rods through block due to cheap plastic cam chain tensioner... those were a crime on that engine) His car had the rare 4 wheel steering option. The Infiniti dealer told him he needed an engine from another car with 4WS... good luck... Finally, after failing to find an engine at a junkyard... I told him to ask the dealer what was the difference. Turned out there were 4 threaded holes needed. These holes were in a boss cast into all Q45 engines of those years but were only drilled and tapped for 4WS cars. I had him ask if they could drill and tap any engine... they said no problem... he quickly sourced an engine and the problem was solved.

My dealer has confirmed with my serial # that my head part numbers are

11040-8J100
11090-8J100

I had sold my GReddy TT kit in the spring to wait for a better option. I am thinking I may do cams and port and polish in preparation for FI down the road. I like the APS kit but I want to wait a little to see how the first kits work for other board members. N/A will be good enough for now.

If this is true and there was no part # changes for the 03 Maxima mid-year (which I would doubt with the new body style coming out) then I should be O.K. with the MAX heads. Good news.

I just got off the phone, ALL 2K2-2K3 Maximas use the same heads. You're good to go.

The '04 Maxima uses different part numbers on most of it's internals. Part of the reason for this is because the VQ35 in the '04+ Maxima is manufactured in the Dechard engine plant in Tennesee. ANYONE seeking brand new OE parts for ANY VQ35 should first inquire about A34 engine parts because they cost a fraction of what the imported parts cost. For example a A34 VQ35 shortblock can be had as little as $1800 but a A33 shortblock will cost more than twice that. A33 valve covers are well over $100 each but A34 valve covers are less than $40 each.
Untill now it seems that the 350Z/G35 crowd hasn't been interested in reseraching the similarities between all the VQ35 engines however the Maxima crowd has been researching it extensively for quite some time.

Yes it is only the VQ30 heads that will cause a few roadblocks. The VTC can be adapted to work on those heads but it will require alittle bit of drilling, tapping and plumbing to secure the chain tensioner that is required for the VTC. As well as a few other things. However the intake port designs are completely different on the VQ30 heads therfore your stock lower intake manifold will not bolt upto it. The VQ30 heads also have the smaller combustion chamber, smaller intake valves and ports (36mm vs. 37mm), larger/heavier buckets and shims.

Dumb question, but why do you guys want to switch to the Maxima VQ head?
