Awd 350z?
Just wondering some questions about awd:
1) First of all, is there any diference between awd and 4wd?
2) Any posibility to make convert our Z in an awd (or 4wd)? (please explain, and most important: how much $$$)
3) Will the RB26 make this? in any case, could I swap it with the VQ35?
Thanks
Alex

There are plenty of threads discussing the difference between 4 WD and AWD on this forum already. Just search.
The G35XAW is a reality, so the answer to your question is technically yes. The complexities in converting a RWD car to AWD are prohibitive, however. Everything in the drive train from the flywheel back is different. I suspect that even the motor mounts, and some suspension bits (at least springs/dampeners) are different as well.
If you could find a wrecked G35XAW where the drive train and suspension were in tact, and had plenty of machine tools, you could do it.
The biggest downsides I see to this are 1) weight. The AWD system is over 200 lbs. heavier than the RWD tranny, propeller shaft, differential and drive-axles. 2) drive train losses. Expect at least a 20 HP loss due to the more complex drive train.
My conclusion is that the advantages of AWD would be lost under the weight & drag penalties unless you were started with over 350HP at the crank. So add at least a SC and tuning to your project.
Good Luck.

Pretty sure their's no such thing as any JDM offering that mates the AWD system with a MT and the VQ engine. That being said, a limited slip front diff isn't in the cards either. Without both, Nissan's choice of how they currently market AWD makes perfect sense, the G35x and the FX sport ute's.

if you were considering transplanting the G35x awd system to the 350z there is a lot more to consider. First of all the front spindles and suspension on the 350z will not accomodate drive shafts... so you were need those off the G35x...
so someone would need to see if the mounting positioning of the G35x suspension is the same so that you could even mount all that stuff... you probably need the entire front crossmember, spindles, control arms, everything... its probably all different to accomodate the drive shafts.
after that you need to make sure that the positioning of the engine versus the front axel is the same... cause if its not, nothing is going to line up... meaning that if the engine sits further back in the 350z compared to the front axle... then your out of luck.
after that... the rest may or may not be a big deal... depending on positioning of the transfer case and how exactly the axles are positioned and what not... i do know that the 350z hardly has any space left... so I have trouble imagining a AWD system fitting in there... but I suppose anything is possible with enough cutting and welding.
my aunt has a G35x and one of these days when shes in the area im gonna put it on the lift and compare and measure just for fun.

I picked up a 2004 g35X drivetrain for the longblock and found some interesting things. The longblock assemblies between the 6spd vq and the awd g35 vq have the same part #'s. The only difference is the upper oilpan assembly which is different between the 2 cars. The upper pan has mount points for the front drive transfer case which sends the front axles to the pass and driver side. The axle actually passes through the oilpan to the driver side of the motor where the axle then mounts up. The front motor mounts are re-located to accomodate the front transfer case so if a swap was considered the front crossmember would be needed as well from the g35X. The other problem is the tranny because they only come in an auto. A 3rd propeller shaft extends forward from the tranny on the passenger side to the forward transfer case to drive the front axles. From the rear of the front doors to the front bumper, the subframes are identical between the 350Z/g35. It really is a neat set-up and it still is amazing how much of the g35X could be swapped to a 350Z with a little time and money.
Anybody want a front transfer case, upper oil pan, and motor mounts for a swap???

sorry to butt in and off topic but PHUNK do you ever come to the Schaumburg area with your car? Those are some AMAZING hp and tq #'s. Are you pushing stock internals with a TT or something? or do you have a built bottom end? Nissan guys around here would DIE to see that car, or ride in it hehe.
If they think my altima VQ is badass with 150 shot of n20, they are going to flip when they see your car and #'s!!!!
